Does anyone elses timing chain make a clattering noise?

I am trying to figure out what I should do about my noisy timing chain. For the first minute of warm up in the morning my chain makes a rather loud clattering noise. Do any of you guys have this issue? If so what did you do about it? Also, does this mean my chain might brake soon? Thanks.

i read somewhere that if you change oil to dino and a little heavier it may help. try searching for the post. my old sentras chain did the same thing but sold it before it got worse.

Thanks for the info, I would rather fix the problem rather then cover it up though. I think I am going to order new chains, water pump and and all tomarrow and do replace the chain myself. The install looks like a pain in **** though!

Take it to the dealer and see what they say, and don't fix it there. It may be a guide or tensioner or something? The timing chain was used so that it would last the life of the car. Unless, you've been towing boats or other cars frequently. I may be off base though.

Cool, I am not the only one! I think the thing you are talking about is called the hydraulic chain tensioner, I guess if air gets in the system in causes the chain to rattle. It takes a lot of work to get to that part though, almost as much work as replacing the whole chain. Maybe this raddle noise is exceptable? I don't want to have to fix it unless it is going to break my engine or something.

Max808, my car has 102K miles and I have never towed anything with it, I just haul **** with it to much .

I would replace the tensioner. BTW, mine does not make that noise, only a funny cricket sound...

There is a TSB on all 95 for timing chain rattle. The fix is to replace the chain tensioner. This needs to be done. I am sure I don't have to say what happens if the chain jumps....minus one engine.

Most likely it's the Tensioner.
Many 95's and some 96's have this
problem.
I have not heard of anyone having a
failure with the Timing Chain linked to this.
I do believe it puts undue stress on the chain but
as I mentioned there are many people with well
over 100,000 miles or over 150,000 and never
messed with the chain.

however, I am not saying you should not fix it.

I also thought that the VQ engine is designed
in such a way that if the Chain fails it will
not ruin your engine, But i am not sure.

my timing chain (95'), when on cold start (mostly below 45 degrees), make a horrible rattling noise. i too was told the problem most likely originates from the tensioner, so i had several estimates done, much to my dismay. i was quoted anywhere from $800 to $2000 to fix this (NOT COOL). i am currently trying to find a way to get nissan to help me fix this problem, for the chain should NOT fail at 70k miles, or even 150k for that matter......

Positive, brong it to the dealer and some guy told me that when the chain gets real hot it tends to stretch because its metal and metal expands to heat, but my noise is not loud only at nights when its real quiet and as I said when I run the car for like the whole day.
