I want to add an aftermarket muffler to my 97GXE that is kinda inexpensive and not too loud like a 4X4 or Mustang. I like a good exhaust sound but I want to have more horsepower and be fast but at the same time not draw attention from my exhaust. Also can I get "any" performance muffler or get one just made specifically for the Maxima. Can I get one online? Website info would be good. Any of you have just a performance muffler not engineered for the Max? Any pros and cons?

There are a ton of good ones

There are alot of good universal mufflers. I would check out some of the universal ones that greddy and apexi (apexi dunk 1 is good deep tone yet not overbearing) makes. I'm not sure what you mean by inexpensive but expect to pay around 250.00 dollars for good power and sound. If there is a muffler shop in your area that sells dynomax you may also want to talk to them, dynomax has a nice tone and wont empty your checking account. Try importparts.com they sell some in there exhaust section.

Just replacing the muffler really wont do anything for horsepower. You need to get a Y-pipe for noticable gains.

You're not gonna notice any difference by swapping out the muffler. I redid the whole exhaust from the resonator back and barely felt a difference. Almost any straight through muffler you get is gonna be loud as hell, but a lot of people like the way it sounds. Honestly, the only reason for swapping out the muffler alone would be for looks, or sound. If you want performance, get a Y-Pipe or a Greddy, or both. And almost any muffler you get is gonna draw attention, but attention can be good.

I had a nice rust hole in my muffler. Drew lotsa attention(chicks) and was good for at least 15hp at the wheels.

Muffler's the only thing I haven't replaced.

Most fun and cheap $ would be an intake. Only $150-$200 and gives you that stoplight speed vs high end power.

Next the Y-pipe for a bit more $ and lots of power.

And for a bit more $ swap the UDP, Cat, and b-pipe. Quieter than a Greddy setup and lots more speed.

The best bet would be installing the Y-pipe, R/T cat, B-pipe (Well not really) and leave the stock muffler in. Thise creates enough power but yet quiet.
