timing chain tensioners and VTC springs
timing chain tensioners and VTC springs
Fist of all I was wondering where to get the "taller" VTC springs, and secondly I was wondering what timing chain guids or tensioners should be replaced when removing VTC's. Also are there any write-ups or other good info on this subject.
Tensioners: The 2 upper ones(only ones you can get to when doing this)
Write-up: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=346608
The tensioners should be in the FSM, I don't remember off the top of my head what they are called besides the "upper" timing chain tensioners. I don't know what you mean by "guide" the only guide I can think of is the metal flange on the top above the VTC gear and the other gear, and I can't think of a reason to replace that.
there's another guide directly opposite the chain tensioner. (the chain is in a triangle pattern. each flat side has either a guide or tensioner)..
the guides don't cost a whole helluva lot, but they also don't need replacement a lot of the time. I'd take a look at them and see what condition they're in before you replace them.
if time is of the essence, buy them from a local dealer before the job, then replace as necessary. return the ones you don't use.
edit.. FYI, the top guide is completely useless. I didn't even install them on my new engine build. the side one I replaced, but it was probably still in good enough shape I could have reused it (old engine had 230k miles on it so it couldn't hurt!)
edit again...

Thanks Matt, I got 190k so I'll check mine first since it's not my only ride and time is no problem. Can't wait to do my VE rebuild, are those reground cams they look a bit more aggressive than stock?
lol, first glance at the pic and I thought.......RTV headgasket?

no, they're stock cams. I just had them hot tanked so they're nice and clean.
the regrinds are coming later. I think I'm going to take a grinder to a set of heads I have in the garage first...

I actually have some of these parts sitting right here in front of me.
VTC Rebuild Kit (qty 2): 13072-97E00
Upper Timing Chain Tensioner: 13070-97E10
Upper Timing Chain Tensioner (opposite side): 13070-97E16
I can't remember which tensioner is which, but I'll figure it out when I have my motor in pieces.
Josh, I just noticed in your writeup that you had the incorrect VTC rebuild kit PN.
