When looking for a used transmission, look at......

So i'm in need of a new transmission and going to be doing the work columbus day weekend. Went to car-parts.com and saw a bunch of transmissions. How, what should i look at in a transmission??? I saw a 1995 3.0 maxima tranny with only 42k on it. Doesn't seem like i believe it, but that really seems good. i've also seend a lot of 60k ones.

I have a auto non locking 98 i30 and currently RIGHT BY my house there's an i30 that hs a rebuilt tranny not too long ago. But i was told if the rebuilt was not done right, it could be worse than to buy a tranny that was not rebuilt. So say i decided to choose like a 65k non-rebuilt tranny, when i go there, is there anything specific i should look for? Parts that MUST be there. I kind of want this to be a take off drop in type of deal. I never changed a tranny before so i'm not sure what parts need to be cleaned before i drop it in there and stuff. I just want to make sure that when i get teh tranny, nothing is bent or messed up. I can still drive my car right now, but i do want to fix it. But i don't want to put a worse tranny in my car like a lot of other parts i have gotten before and they were refurb. I'm almost tempted to give it to a shop. inputs would be great, thanks.

also, if its just my torque converter thats going, how can i determine that?? and is it cheaper/easier or what not to change the converter????

Automatics don't tend to have all the problems that a manual tranny does. And given how available the lower mileage used auto tranny is, I can't see too many situations where rebuilding it would make sense.

If the autos have bearing problems like the manual trannys do, then a tranny shop should be able to open it up and give a good inspection. But most of the auto tranny stuff I've heard about is simply automatic shifting problems, and that sounds like something hard to find without tearing it all apart.

But this is just my general impression - I don't work on autos like I do manuals.

ok, so basically i should go with a lower mileage tranny instead of a used rebuilt one. Thanks for the input. I just don't want to put a bad tranny in my car if i could prevent it by looking at it.

With autos, I'm not sure whether I prefer low-mileage used vs. rebuilt. But I haven't heard about many problems with low mileage automatics, so I'd probably choose that route.

had problems with a rebuilt, spent 800 and then tossed it in the trash. got a used 95 for 350 and installed my self. id have to say the 95 feels way stronger then my 97 ever did. I understand the feeling that junkyards could lie about the mileage, if you want get the VIN off the transmission and check into it.

I had issues with my '96 auto tranny shifting badly/bucking when going into overdrive and hence wound up replacing the tranny with a used unit. The used unit had about 160K km on it. The dealer did the work for about $800 and all is well. Most of the used engines or tranny's on the market for our vintage cars are in the over 100K mileage area, but the 'recycler' will tell you that the engine or tranny came out of a 30K to 60K mileage vehicle. How are you going to confirm or dispute that? You're not, you'll purchase the "low mileage" tranny or engine and be happy about your purchase. Anyhow to make this post shorter, my used tranny works fine. The dealer mentioned that they think my original tranny's torque converter solonoid went bad due to a damaged wire harness. They found the damage after they installed the used tranny and got the same CEL codes. Who knows, perhaps the old tranny would have been fine with a new wire harness, but I went this far, and didn't want to take the chance of reinstalling the old tranny (with 195K km) only to be told its still an issue.

ok, so i'll just get a used tranny. I'm beginning thinking that its not just my tranny but something else. I just parked my car and when i put it in neutral, it was buckling and wanted to go forward, and when i put it in reverse, it wanted to go forward. But when i put it in drive its fine if its warm. otherwise it'll want to stall like i let the clutch out too much. But again, this is an automatic. I just want to be able to fix this thing before i spend my money on a used tranny, n it being like crap and winding up having to buy a new car.

P.S. So i should buy the tranny n get it checked out by like aamco or something???? How much do they charge for a diagnosis??

Call several shops to get a quote, don't ask the forum as the price you get will vary from the person to person. If buying a used tranny, at least purchase additional warranty and have the tranny flushed (replace fluid). Should something go wrong with the used tranny down the road, if you had the unit professionally installed you will have recourse with warranty provider.
