how many kilometer/miles when tranny went kaput?

I wanna know what was your odometer reading, when your tranny went bad? I know everyone takes care of their cars, and it depends on your driving, and bla bla bla. But wat is the life span of a normal tranny on our maxima's?

i have a 97 5spd with 237-xxx and my input shaft bearing is taking a crap, but other then that everything has been going good on the tranny

My mechanic noticed a seal leak at about 130xxx
I didn't have time to rebuild/have rebuilt so I just replaced the seal as a temporary fix.
The tranny died within the next two months.

I just broke 300,000 miles with my 98 GXE 5sp. My tranny has been whining for 75K. Replaced clutch twice and have original exhaust.

Number 1, (assuming it was original) about 70k miles.
Number 2, around 3k miles later.
Number 3, about 6k miles later.
Number 4 seems to be doing well ATM.

My original manual tranny went 120k before the carrier bearing wear became a problem. My rebuild is up to 55k.

I rebuild a bunch of manual trannys for the 4th gen, and I've seen them die as early as 60k, others go 180k. I don't think the driver is the deciding factor actually - something in the design causes some to die early.

220+ kms. Still orginal clutch I assume. I bought her used.
Input shaft sweat around the seal. Replaced seal at about 180 kms.
So far so good.

Thanx for the support, I knew it wasn't me when I swapped out my tranny at 192k miles. I dropped off my tranny at the tranny place and they gave it back to me unassembled. I didn't bother to inspect it, nor did they tell me exactly what was wrong. I just threw a 5th gen tranny in there and it's been good.

108,000 my car was sitting for two years without no one driving it, before i brought it. input and output shaft went out, so i had the whole thing rebuilt and had a new clutch put in

First maxima I owned tranny went at 80,000kms. I took it in for a leak repair at 30,000kms.
Second Maxima tranny started making tons of noise at about 235,000kms.

IIRC a new - non rebuild is around $2200, and that's bodyshop price...

My syncro's started going bad around 165,xxx, now it will barely go in 3rd(w/ 171,xxx)...

my dad's old 1989 maxima GLE that thing never had a tranny problem. used amsoil transmission fluid, it was still going at 329,000miles before the engine mounts got so rusted that they broke

My five speed has 233.000 miles, had it inspected at 230,000 and the input bearing was replaced.

I just bought a project car for $300 from the original owner. Apparently, the engine jumped time. The car has 386,000 miles on the clock with the original motor and automatic transmission still in it!!! I'm shopping for a motor right now for the car and I'm going to try the transmission since the fluid still looked good. I’m just looking for bragging rights I guess.

All the labor to remove the tranny and tear it completely apart, and you replaced only the input shaft bearing?

I have yet to see a Maxima tranny where the input shaft bearing failed all by itself. IME, it fails because the diff carrier bearings fill the gear oil with metal gravel.

so, besides that and the clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, what else would you recommend to be replaced? Maybe the flywheel?

No, I just meant the other 5 transmission bearings. IMO, there is rarely a situation where changing just 1 of the 6 makes sense. They're all prone to wear, they're not expensive, and something you don't want to go back into the tranny to fix later. And like I said before, I've never seen an input shaft bearing die by itself, so if only the input shaft bearing was changed I would assume there are other bearings that were worn out that didn't get changed.

Nope, just all the people who changed their tranny's that read this thread

Seriously, I would say given the lifespan of all these, and knowing what I know about these cars(not saying I know it all...) that around 150k you should start to think about a rebuild. Maybe start gathering you parts and saving for the rebuild and reading up, or just saving up to pay someone to do it if you can't..

Just my 0.015cents

EDIT: I was more or less referring to the 5spd's, the auto's may or may not last as long. I would think that they would probably go longer, especially w/ a tranny cooler.

i know thats wat i thought. now that i hear i might as well get an auto and a tranny cooler and change the fluid regularly. and stop being concerned about it.

First trans at 95k, pretty much blew up. Shifted gears by itself and lots of parts were broken, dont know the full details on that one.

Second trans was a rebuilt 4th gen went at about 135k maybe. Bad diff bearing. Replaced with a 40k 5th gen trans and its still good.

Are the 00-02 tranny's the same as the 97-99's? When I was calling around to junkyards to get my 1st replacement they said there was something different about them, and that they would not work...

Barring they are both non-vlsd obviously.

So what does this mean our engines are strong as hell but our trans suck? I have 265,000 on my engine using 10w 30 no oil burning... Transmissions going out slowly. I had an auto and i use to beat on it super hard and never had any problems. Can someone tell me why our transmissions go out so easy?

So easily? 150K is alot to get out of a little tanny like these. You won't usually get that many miles out of a domestic tranny. You would be lucky to get 75k out of a Mustang/Camaro transmission. Granted, they may take more abouse, but 150,000 miles is nothing to sneeze at for our cars.

Most of them would last alot longer if it wasn't for the inherent diff bearing problem...

The 00-01 transmissions will drop right into a 4th gen. The shifter sits a little further back and first gear has a synchro. Supposedly they are also stronger than 4th gen transmissions and are less susceptible to diff bearing problems, not really sure if thats true or not, but its what a lot of people say.

i'm afraid to talk about transmissions because i start worrying about the way it shifts and wonder how much longer its gonna last. 168,000 and the dealer tech said the fluid looks and smells perfect!!! so, i try to not beat on her and let her warm up b4 i run even on warm days. lesson learned......

83k miles and my bearings were blown.. drove it like that for about 5k miles until i had no choice but to fix it. and i had a cracked right case.
