Drilling through the firewall?
Drilling through the firewall?
I was wondering if it is safe or legal to drill through the firewall so i can keep my n2o line inside my car, instead of running it underneath the car exposed to all the elements and such.
If it is legal is there a best place to do this or just where ever is convenient?
Thanks,
Alex

Depending on the size, you should be able to use an existing hole. Even then, drilling isn’t a huge deal. Never heard/cared about the legality of it either. If you do drill, get a nic3e grommet to make it look stock.
The hose is only a 4AN line so its not any bigger than a 1 gauge wire. I want to drill on the drivers side of the car because the intake is also on the drivers side where i hook the n2o into.
Any who thanks for the replies. Anyone else?

I prefer to run a line underneath the car and then drill a hole in the trunk. I wouldn't want happy gas leaking into the cabin.

I've done a few holes through the firewall for my nitrous lines and nitrous wiring, up high so it enters under and to the left of the master cylinder. I've run two niitrous lines through the cabin - under the rear seat, down the left side of the car in the floor channel, and up behind the left front side panel, just under the fuse panel. I've also run wiring for the heater in the same route.
This shows my -6AN line going to a Y :

I got a "close quarters" drill by Milwaukee and used a short DeWalt step-bit to get up under the dash and drill. The close-quarter drill has a right-angle head, and the step bit makes it easy to drill a pilot hole and just keep making it bigger until big enough. My bit goes to up to 7/8", starting with a pilot hole.
This setup works very well for making holes in firewalls and other obscure places. Harbor Freight also now has that same type of drill, and much cheaper than Milwaukee.

I don't know what legality has to do with it.
I drilled a large hole into the firewall of my '96 to run some 1/0 awg. wire for my amplifiers. For reference, that's about the diameter of a garden hose. I found a nice place on the driver's side, below the brake booster, near the strut tower that dropped in accessably below the dash.
