Steaming Motors?

I've seen guys steam clean their motors and I was wondering what I can mess up or short out doing this. My engine compartment is pretty dirty and I want to clean it up before I start to moddy out under the hood. Iv'e also seen guys go at it with a garden hose I've never been to sure about the effects of such and operation.

I've used pressure washer to clean the engine and no problem. Steaming sounds like a cool idea too.
