Synthetic transmission fluid change....or not.

I have a 1996 GLE automatic with 130k. I have serviced the transmission every 30 to 40k. It is now time again and I was thinking of going to synthetic. (I have never used synthetic in the tranmission)
My questions: Are there any ramifications or advantages with going to synthetic with so many miles and what is your opinions on best brand of fluid to use.

P.S. I do plan on flushing it out to change all of the fluid.

Thanks to everyone for your input.

IMHO, syn is a waste on a Nissan tranny since JATCO transmissions have a propensity to be hard on fluids and sheer the ATF down pretty thin quickly... You are better off putting in a multi-vehicle ATF (a step above MaticD/DexronIII) and a step below syn (Mobil1,Amsoil etc) and changing it out every 25K miles.

I did the manual flush as outlined in the stickies in the fluids and lubricants section. I have the same mileage as you. I had no slipping or any other problems afterwards. My old fluid was dark brown! I did this flush over a year ago and the fluid still looks clean and doesn't smell burnt. I used Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. Some pretty good stuff.

I had 150k when I did the tranny drain/refill in my max. Fluid looked like it has been there forever so after switching to Amsoil synthetic cold shifts especially from 1st to 2nd became much smoother and transmission felt smooter but it can be a placebo effect too. If you want to switch, why not? Costs same amount of money in the long run anyway(considering that you'll extend drain intervals). Just my opinion
