what options do i have for tranny
what options do i have for tranny
i have a 95 auto. my tranny is giving up on me so i m in need of a new tranny.
i looked in the stickies and everywhere but couldnt find any info about another transmission alternative. i wanna know if a 5Gen maxima or the infiniti I30 trannies can be a right fit for my 95 4Gen Auto.
i live in canada so its really hard to find parts close to home. so i wanna know wat other options do i have other than just 4Gen maximas.

you would want to look for a 95-99 maxima/I30 tranny. 00/01 maxima transmission will work too.if you want to go VLSD you'll need a different drivers axle. there is a thing in the stickies about identifying non-locking vs locking transmissions in the stickies.
i just found that, its on the second page. i have been hearing that the manual transmissions goo bad sooner than the autos. even though i do love to drive a manual but i wanna spend my money on something that will last me longer, without any problems. would i have to change the axles on a automatic tranny too from a 2k / 2k1 tranny?

The 5MT's have a history of bad diff bearings, but if you get it properly rebuilt and shimmed it'll be fine.
so i looked around and i found a 99 tranny with 60,507km but it is not a locking differntial, and the guy is asking $750.00. and then there is the 2000 I30 tranny with 77,000km thats for $1800.00. which one is better
and i wanted to ask one more thing. does the tranny come out by itself from the bottom or does it have to be taken out with the engine?

99 is better, plus If someone could link me to the thread where someone actually got the 00/01 trans to work...............I don't think anyone has yet........
Yes, it comes out from the bottom, you don't even need to remove the y-pipe or x-member if you remove the 4 bolts for the trans mount instead of just one. FTR, the engine comes out from the bottom as well

i talked to dave at the dealership. he told me that nissan has some remanufactured trannies for the 4Gen, and they have 7 of them in stock in a warehouse in montreal. but he is asking $2,500.00 for one. and it has some warranty on it. i think he said 12 months or 60,000 km or something like that.
now you guys tell me which one should i get. would it be possible to swap the tranny in my garage or do i need special tools or a professional? i personally m not a pro (yet) but i m confident with myself working on my car.

Of course, that one later blew up, my fault by using my old VB with the failed solenoids. 6 forward gears...FTL.

Mostly it's just a lot of tedious stuff, all of the work on top.
so which one do you guys think i should get?
1 - the remanufactured one from dealer with warranty for $2500.00
2 - the 99 with 60,000km for $75000 which is a non-locking differential. about 10 hours drive away.
3 - the 2000 infiniti I30 with 70,000km for $1,800.00

Ummmm, yeah..... DUDE....
A quick search on car-part.com in Region-Western Canada shows that HondaToy Automotive in Edmonton has THREE '95 maxima automatic trannies w/117-180k kilo's, there asking $500 for each one, you could go there with cash and get it for even less. Ummmmm, yeah biotch, you owe me!!

Where to find VLSD automatics....
Search car-part.com for a replacement transmission for '99 Infiniti - select "locking AT" when it comes up - you'll find a list of RE4F04V part-number transmissions for sale. Most likely donors are from I30t Infinifi cars. These have the VLSD differentals which work quite nicely on the drag strip and street.
I just took delivery of a VLSD automatic from a '01 AE Maxima, which looks almost identical to the Infiniti tranny except for how the external fluid lines have a different bend, but the rest looks the same as the 95-99 tranny. This actually carried on to some 2002 V6 Altimas as well.
So you can see that there are several sources of donor cars for a VLSD tranny for our cars.
