need advice on Rim offset please

hey guys, I found rims, 17x8 w/ the right bolt pattern but offset is 28mm, now please, no stupid responses, I really need responses from people who either have this setup or tried this and it didn't work

the only thing that concerns me is scratching w/ the fender, now I know the rears will most likely fit, but I'm worried about the front when the wheels is turning

again, please, only knowlegeble responses

Konstantin

thanks in advance for the help

That's pretty off from stock

I have a set of 50mm 17X8" GS400 wheels on my Maxima. I had to use a 6mm spacer in order to clear my Wilwood calipers, but other than that everything is fine. I wish they were 38mm so I wouldn't have had to do anything. They should fit and not rub the fender considering the fender gap. I have H&R's and I still have plenty of gap. I'm guessing they'd fit since I went 12mm the other way. I'm assuming you are looking at a set of deep dish wheels are wheels that have a huge lip.

like i said that is the recommended off set.
when you add spacers to get clearance, you actually add stress to your wheel bearing which can cause premature wear & eventually destroy you wheel bearing & hub

I like 'em, hopefully I won't have any problems

they are going to stick out too much... your fender and tire will get to know each other a little too well...

Like Phuong said... they will stick out a bit... I doubt if you can put anything bigger than 235s in the front without hitting the fender... The backs will look OK, though.

Wouldn't it make sense that the bigger the offsetm, the further away is the rim from the car, thus allowing 50mm offset wheels to fit on a max without problems.

You've got it backwards. A 50mm offset (or backspacing) would push the wheel inboard and possibly rub on suspension components. A wheel with a a 28mm offset push the the tire outboard and would stick out beyond the fender on the front, possibly rubbing on the fender when the suspension is compressed.

The reverse is true... bigger number moves the rim more inward... The offset number is actually negative but no one says -45mm offset, just 45... i guess cuz no one 'needs' positive offsets.

Andy, yes, the rims are only for AutoX

Mark: I'm going to keep the old rims, and put some $20 rubber for the street, since the 17x8 are only for AutoX

hopefully the weather will hold up, otherwise we'll be sliding like freaging last time

Re: That's pretty off from stock

I thought that most FWD had "true" positive offsets and that older RWD cars use negative offsets.

The pic at http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/tech/offset.htm

helped me understand a bit more in terms of caliper clearance. It seems that lower offsets push the spokes away from the rotor/caliper setup.

No, it's +45mm offset. Negative offsets are run by those lowrider cars :P

seouljah, 45 should be ok, as long as you dont put a big brake kit on. My Blitz 19x8.5s have a 42mm offset and yea they are huge rims but i still need 5mm spacers for the Stillen/AP brake kit... my ADR RSs were 18x8 with a 38mm and there was no problem with fitment

Dude, can you get the rims and tires for the same price since they screwed up? If you can why not get them, pull the tires off and sell them and put whatever rubber on them you want?

LOL, oops! brain freeze on my part... sorry!

If Autox only, why 17x8? why not a smaller (and lighter) rim?

no, can't get 'em w/ the rubber, w/ the rubber they are 700, and it's BFG Comp A/T HR4 Rated, they go about $125 on tire rack, I don't know, they are ****ty tires for autoX, but I really want the rims

the reason you want to use 17" is because of the sidewall roll, the smaller the rim is, the bigger the sidewall, so it rolls a lot, instead of turning the car, so that's bad, if you have 17" then you're at about perfect side wall, where they are stiff enough that when you turn, they actually turn instead of roll the sidewall, and when you get competitive tires, the sidewall is also reinforced so you have perfect turning

that's why smaller cars run 13" aluminum wheels (ie 225/50/13). Smaller wheel = less weight, shorter gearing due to smaller-than-stock rolling diameter, less sidewall. Best of all worlds

dude, it sucks, I went to get the rims finished in San Diego, and this body shop told me to go to this place and so i went down there today but they dont do aftermarket rims, so I have to take them direct to Wheels America in Long Beach, thats why i'm in Irvine today. gona drop em off tomorrow, soooo damn annoying... so then the 5mm Spacers i got em today... so the rims are holding me up, I cant install the brakes, they wont fit with the stocks, so damn, and i dont wana put the body kit on until i get rims, for obvious ricer reasons
then comes the intake/Y-pipe/cat/exhaust waiting for the exhaust and y-pipe
by the end of next month my car should be pretty pretty also gota Carbon Fiber hood
PM me seouljah, see if you wana meet up this weekend
