Glare Sheilds for headlights
Glare Sheilds for headlights with pics!
Well, for those of you who cannot afford projector retrofits or whatever your excuse may be. In my case i received plug and play HIDS as a gift, and well i couldnt get rid of them so i made do with them. I figured what the hell may as well use it, if i re aim them the glare cant be that bad, well i re aimed them low, and i didnt get flashed for awhile, till i put my sub and amp in the trunk and i guess it lowered the back enough for it to start glaring bad.
Needless to say i was tired of being flashed, on top of that i have 43W ballasts compared to the traditional 35W, so it was a problem, i saw a few things on the net using old touch up paint cans for glare sheilds, considering i work at a dealership i had no problem picking up a few, it seemed everytime i left them outside to dry someone threw them away, so i made do with what i had at home.
Here is what i used. I had some 1/2 or 3/4" copper piping, i cut 2 lenghts approx 1.5-2" long, i then proceeded to cut it in half, so your making a half pipe for those of you who use to skateboard. You need to leave about 3/8" of an inch so you can JB weld it to the base of the bulb.
Here is the important part, it needs to be painted either flat silver or flat black, so it can absorb the light. If its shiny it will reflect it and put it everywhere which isnt the idea here. Also it should stay a few mm away form the bulb itself, to give it room so it wont overheat or anything.
I will post up pics later, if all goes well hopefully glare will be kept to a minimum. Also for those who are unaware, eye lids dont reallly help at all for glare, glare is caused by the light reflecting off the bottom of the housing!
As you can notice there is some cut off now, i never had this before. side glare is still there but who cares lol.

In this pic, obviously its nothing to brag about, there is still glare, but it is MUCH better. I am trying to find my old pictures of when i first put them in, it looked the same except a lot higher of the wall was lit up and the light was more intense when it got higher.

What i was trying to capture in this picture was, how much lower you can bend down infront of the car before you get blinded with the HIDS. Im not a tall guy, 5ft 4, i bent down to where my head was approximately 3.5-4ft level and i was getting blinded. With the sheilds i can go a lot lower, perhaps id say with my chin just over the hood. I am lowered too lol.

Overall i am pretty happy, obviously the cut off with projectors is much better without a doubt, but they are designed differently, much much better design, and the sheilds went okay, the one thing i noticed is when i got hoem one of the sheilds fell off, i guess i didnt give he JB weld enough time to cure, but god damn those things get hot, i may reconsider using copper, it transfers the heat too fast, literally i tested it with the sheild just sitting on the base and i had them on for maybe 30 seconds and the sheild burned my finger lol.

lol well, i started late, and my main computers hard drive/motherboard was taken out in a power outage..stupid surge protector my ***. So right now i am using my laptop, and for whatever reason it wont pick up my camera when i plug it in, once i figure it out ill post pictures!
And yeah, it was my uncle who bought them for me..beats the crappy clothes i usually get from him that i never wear LOL. Ideally i would have perferred a set of TL Bi-xenons

haha damn your lucky. Well hopefully tomorrow ill have them in, i was hoping to have them in tonight, but i had to stay OT so not enough time for he JB weld to cure with the bulbs out. Decided to rebuild my Z32 calipers..god 3 of the 4 pistons were frozen stuck..no wonder why i couldn get them out haha. I might do a write up on that if need be.
I added pictures. As i said in my original post i did edit it. They are not as good as the cut off in the 5.5gen maxima, and obviously not any where close to the cut off in most projectors, but it did help a lot, i drove around in white rock, primarily a rich part of my area, and i would get flashed atleast 3-4 times in a span of 30 minutes when im there. sometimes more sometimes less, well i drove around making sure i was going down mostly 2 way streets where it would be the worst and i never got flashed. Overall it should be good.
Hope this helps and inspires some people to make there own. I may try mount the sheild on the actual headlight housing rather then the bulb base when i get time next, will make things much simplier. Or perhaps ill just get projectors and be done with the ghetto reflectors.
