No shifter resistance (manual tranny)

Hi,
I have a 97 gxe, manual, and the shifter is a little odd.

When i put it in neutral, it has resistance if i push it to the right, but not if i push it to the left.
I can shift pretty normally, but if i go over a speed bump, sometimes it'll pop out of first.

I was wondering what the name of the part is, and if anyone has ever done this before, what level of difficulty/time length is the install?

Thanks!
Zac

motor and or tranny mounts?
cause it sounds like your motor and tranny are moving around a bit over bumps
same thing happen to me a while back ,used to pop out gears, replaced all mounts
and the problem was solved

My tranny was doing that. Actaually it got that bad whenever i let off the throttle in first gear..ie in a parking lot, it would pop out of gear and would NOT go back in. I believe the first gear synchro was shot, and the fact that there was so much play in my differential carrier bearing the diff gear hit first gear

To replace the synchro on first basically the whole tranny will need to be dissasembled, so if you do it yourself you will need a bearing and seal kit, and at a minimum the first gear synchro, but the thing is, if your down there already is it worth replacing all the synchros?

Kinda one of those things where you can only replace whats broken, but if anything else goes wrong you will be kicking yourself for not replacing it when it was already apart.

wow, lol, i have the same exact feelings in my shifter. in neutral, it'll go to the left with no effort, if you try to push it to the right towards 5th and reverse you kinda have to force it that way. oh well, i dont think too much of it really, but i'll keep an eye on this thread

idk about popping out of gear, i'd go with the guys above. but mine feels the same. IIRC there are springs that keep the shifter centered when in neutral. I just assumed one of them was worn out or wealer than the other. It doesn't affect my shifting at all tho.

There is a spring in the shifter assembly (above the cat) that provides resistance against 1-2. It's not a problem with the tranny.

as far as i know its normal to have no resistance to the left but some to the right, i always thought it was to prevent you from throwing it in reverse inadvertently.

Do you know a part name or # or description?

Also - im pretty sure that the popping out of gear isnt because of the tranny - i believe its because there is no resistance. It never pops out of second or any other gears.

If it only wants to pop out of first, then that sounds like *maybe* first synchro or something else inside the tranny.

The spring makes sense. But the issue of it popping out of gear still makes me believe it is a synchro issue. Mine was doing the same thing till i got a new tranny and the problem went away, which leads me to believe it was an internal component.

Fast only shows 1 spring. Its part number is

34573-40U00. For those of you with FAST, it is located in section 341. It seems to be on the left side of the shift fork that moves back and forth, but i am not sure hard to tell on the diagram on fast.

Hmm, i cant recall if im pressing in the clutch when im going over the speed bumps.. i probably am because im going slowly...
It doesnt happen all the time, just once in a while..

Sorry for the noob question, but what is a fast?

I looked the shifter area up on courtesy parts and dont see anything that resembles a spring
