Anyone want to rebuild my vtc's?
Anyone want to rebuild my vtc's?
Seriously, I'll pay someone in the Eastern Us or Great lakes area if they're able to do it! I cant find anyone in the Toronto/Southern Ontario area that knows anything about the VTC issue, or has any experience in rebuilding them, (Nissan dealers included) When i've brought the TSB's / rebuild instructions to local mechanics they've laughed at me and said it was an unnecessary repair.
Well, my VTC's are grouded, but still clack ALL the time. My understanding is left unchecked, they'll eventually break the cap and destroy the engine. (I'm also using the toyota filter on 15W40)
Any takers?

Take a look here first.
You may be able to do it yourself, and save some cash, as well as have the pride of knowing you fixed it yourself.
on the other hand, if you do it yourself, and it fubars...
also about having them Grounded...
See this.

Wha? thats a joke right? Would be awesome if you could put a VQ in a 3rd gen... .. Can you? = \
Anyhow.. I grounded my VTC's and noticed no difference. I also had stalling/idiling problems at the time, but that was related to dead injectors and is now fixed. All you can hear now is what i'm pretty sure is the VTC's full time.
Someone in the other thread mentioned an exhaust issue, which is interesting, as I've been told I have a small exhaust leak. But after years of hearing the vtc's, i'm still pretty sure they are the main source of the clacking noise.
I actually brought Josh's writeup along with the TSB's to the mechanic who did my injectors but he didnt want to touch the VTC issue.
That being said.. I've read it, and dont trust my skill level to do something that is that critical to the engine (if I screw up) .
So ya, I'll get the exhaust checked out/fixed to rule that out.. But i'm still looking for a potential VTC rebuilder.
Also, my guess is that nobody in Canada knows anything about 3rd gen VTC's because there were probably less that 2000 SE's sold here.

yeah, the vq was a joke.
Im kinda surprised no-one will do it.
mebe its because its such a critical part.
the vtc can be replaced, but for a considerable more ammount of money.
I'm guessing thats why you're pushing the rebuild.
Being from the middle of the states(above Texas, if you aren't too familiar with the geography here), I don't know anybody in that area.
do you feel up to taking it out, and sending it to someone to rebuild?
I personally know little about them,
maybe you could try an engine swap?
not a VQ swap, but another VE...
DOES ANYBODY ELSE HAVE A MORE USEFUL SUGGESTION?

Hmm.. taking the vtc's out and sending them to someone for rebuild may be possbile.. but that still requires alot of the engine to be opened up and leaves potential for something to go awray. And the actual process of getting them out/back is what i am nervous about. I could probably do the actual rebuild part if I didnt have to take them out and put it back together :P
I'd rather at least work on them with someone who has done a succesful rebuild before.
As for an engine swap, I belive thats still way more pricey than a vtc rebuild/replace. And I wouldnt really trust it unless the engine came from a well maintained 94, as I think that year they put larger oil gallies in the VE.
And this question is probably ridiculous, but I have to ask based on the fact that grounding ones vtc's doesnt cause cataclysmic engine failure.. What if you were to just REMOVE the vtc's alltogether?
