exhaust opinions

I need a complete new exhaust minus the cat ( i replaced this past spring). I'm looking for a decent quality for a good price, I don't need something high performance and high money. So I am leaving it to the experts here to give me ideas of where to go and what to get.

Get a custom made one at an exhaust shop, shouldn't be too much.

If you want stock replacement, go to www.rockauto.com and get the Walker brand stuff, it fits fine.

Yeah im actually at that stage too, but i want a more performance geared exhuast since im changing out y pipe, headers, possibly the b pipe too. Would a custom made one be good for that or should i go with one thats already made for performance, I dont want to spend crazy money but i want something that sounds pretty deep.

ok, so if i'm going to an exhaust shop, i'd like to know what i need so i both don't look like a complete idiot and so i don't get taken to the cleaners. I need the entire exhaust from the manifold back, so is that a y,b,cat, and muffler? are there other parts i need?

I got dail up so i can't really hear all of the different set ups they have on the exhaust page. Never seen a max with a cattman, is it worth the price and how does it sound? Thanks for the help.

it sounds like you just want a replacement exhaust nothing with a louder tone or performance benefit.

Find a good condition stock exhaust and install that. or the apexi WS is pretty much the stock replacement, decent price.

or +1 on the rockauto.

hey there is a 1996 max for 3 thou that i am thinking of buying. But it is about 11 yrs old and the owner told me it had stalled on him twice this yr.... I don't want it to die on me in the middle of the desert. Is a 96 reliable in general?

Heh didn't mean to jack the thread, didn't think my question was going to be extended so much. Plus i think its better then opening a million threads that are closely related, then ya'll would be *****ing that there is a thread like this (mowgli) but it would never really answer my question.

Sorry, that's the first time I've *****ed on the org...but when i saw that 2 of his 4 total posts were thread jacks, I had to say something. And the thing is, his question isn't too related to either thread he tried to jack; other than the fact that he wants to buy a max....

Anyway, what I was going to say originally is:
I got a custom 2.5" catback, with resonator, made for 180 at a local muffler shop. It was sorta a hack job, but that place just sucks. If you go custom, find a good shop and get a decent muffler. My stupid ebay muffler was loud as ****.

Cost me $110 for a 2.5" catback to be bent and welded, including welding on a muffler of my choice, and all the hanger pieces.

yeah, thats what i am going to keep doing. originally i just wanted to know the names of all the parts and what brands people liked. i think i've got it now. i need a y,b, a resonator, muffler, and catalytic converter. catback is just the b and muffler, right? I'm not going to go custom so there is cattman, warpspeed, budget, and stillen. am i forgetting anything?

I don't know about changing out your cat converter, i know many people that have full exhaust and keep their original because the stock creates some back pressure which is good, you don't want too loose too much back pressure or you will end up loosing some power, you always need a little, of course too much is also bad. But thats pretty much all as far as exhaust goes, unless you want to step up with headers.

Go with stock if you don't want performance or high costs.

Muffincakes; go post your question in the "I am a newb with a question" section. Don't jack other peoples threads. Especially with such an irrevelant question to the one being asked. Not to be an *** or anything.

I too need a new complete exhaust system, but I am going with the Cattman.

Umm no do a little research, of course you need to reduce the most you can but with some setups the reduction of back pressure can actually reduce performance. Google is your friend .

yeah...i said reducing is good, just not to over do it. It doesn't matter on your car because its probably not boosted, you will only notice the loss if its turboed or supercharged.

BACKPRESSURE = TORQUE?
An old hot-rodder's tall tale: Engines need some backpressure to work properly and make torque. That is not true. What engines need is low backpressure, but high exhaust stream velocity. A fast-moving but free-flowing gas column in the exhaust helps create a rarefaction or a negative pressure wave behind the exhaust valve as it opens. This vacuum helps scavenge the cylinder of exhaust gas faster and more thoroughly with less pumping losses. An exhaust pipe that is too big in diameter has low backpressure but lower velocity. The low velocity reduces the effectiveness of this scavenging effect, which has the greatest impact on low-end torque.

from the exhaust info thread:http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=322569
