5-speed tranny life?

Just curious. How many miles have everyone gotten with their 1995-96 5-speed transmissions before it needed a rebuild?

I did talk with a really good local Nissan transmission guy today and he said it hard to tell just by what I told him. He said it really shouldn't make must noise and that with 155k on it, it will probably need a rebuild soon. I think I might take the car to a local Nissan dealership and have them do the full inspection and really check out the tranny as much as they can. I think it will be worth the peace of mind.

But I was just curious how many miles people have gotten out of their 5-speed before needing a rebuild.

i guess it would depend on how hard you drive the car (i.e. racing) and how much. my trans is starting to get hard to throw in gear driving normally so yeah i think its time for me to do so

Mine died at 140k doing just regular driving.

I wouldn't trust the dealer to do transmission work - I've rebuilt trannys that were supposed dealer rebuilds - my oh my what a mess. Find a local transmission shop for this.

156k+ counting, all i needed to do was replace the clutch which i have done less then a month ago, and i drive it hard at least once a day because i have a aggressive driving style. I don't do anything crazy or cut anyone off though.

148k and counting but I don't expect it to last past 170k.

My guess is though that they die early judging by the number of people that post up problems.

question for you guys....what kind of clutch and pressure plate set ups are you guys running? i was wondering if running too stiff of a pressure plate can decrease the life of the trans significantly

I just put in a exedy stage 1 racing clutch. I like it a lot more then the stock after i got used to it. I don't know how much damage a stiff pressure plate can put on a trans but it can't be good for the transmission.

First trans replaced at a little over 100,000 miles. Another 100,xxx on the second. Still on second clutch.. the throwout is starting to chatter a bit now...

In theory the bearings won't last as long. I dont' think it's a big difference though. The real risk of running a heavy clutch is greater risk of shredding a gear. And worn bearings are also a risk of blowing out a gear, so used tranny + heavy clutch = blown gear. Of course using the clutch more without dumping it will take care of that problem, but nobody really does that.

Now at 223K miles with original 5-speed tranny and clutch. Replaced slave cylinder and flex hose once, but original tranny and clutch still going strong.
