EGR Flow Issue Light - Not the valve...please help

Hi

For years I have been having my check engine light go on and off indicating an EGR Flow problem. I have replaced my EGR valve and the temperature solinoid, but the light still comes on!

I am now going to sell my 96 Maxima and need to have this issue fixed so that the purchaser can get the car to pass inspection.

Any ideas what might be wrong? Could it be a clog? computer problem? Are there any ways to fix this that might be cheaper then a dealer?

Keep in mind I cannot just ignore it because I am selling the car...otherwise the car runs beautifully.

Thanks for the help!

It is almost never the EGR valve.

Clean out your EGR guide tube. It connects the valve to the upper intake manifold. And it's totally clogged with carbon.

This link has a good diagram of the EGR tube that should be cleaned, see part # 14713 and 14120. http://www.courtesyparts.com/betasit...1785_1797.html

Is the tube easy to clean?

Is the EGR tube easy to clean? What tools would be necesarry and how long should this take?

Because I do not live near the car at the moment I might just have to have someone take it to a mechanic...how much do you think they would charge? doesn't sound like too time intensive of a process.

Thanks!

I have no idea how much it would cost to have a shop does the cleaning. When I did it, I removed the tube from the car and then soaked it in a cleaning agent overnight (I used carburetor cleaner). No special tools required, either a 10mm or 12 mm socket (don't remember which) should do it. Removal, clean (after soaking) and reassemble took me about 1.5 hours.
