need help fixing sticky odometer
need help fixing sticky odometer
My odometer+trip meter will work when i first turn the car on but then after going for some distance (maybe 20 miles ish) they will both become stuck.
I know there have been other people with this issue and other threads talking about it but google search comes up with nothing (google) Does anyone know how to fix this or could someone point me in the direction of the older threads?
I want this fixed obviously so my cars milage doesnt get off too bad and plus not having a trip meter is a PITA.
Thanks, Brent

ya, i do have a working gauge from a gxe but i want to keep my white SE gauges. plus i dont want the miles to be off as much as they would be. my gxe gauge is at 108k, SE gauge is at 167k.

The 95-96 odometers are gear driven. When you press the reset button you disengage the gear drive so that the numbers on the trip odometer can roll around to zero. Sometimes the gear drive gets stuck in the disengaged position. If pressing and releasing the button several times doesn't re-engage it, you may try a very light shot of CRC Electronics cleaner or WD-40. If you use WD-40, try and avoid getting any on the numbers or the gauge faces.
got stuck mean ? they just come back to zero ? or at the point where they were ? i mean the speed u were driving ?
if they just come back to zero (both) then you have electrical signal/speed siganl problem or wiring , and if they get stuck at what speed you were driving then you have mechanical problem
plz clarify so we can help u fix.
thanks

Hey, I hate to bump a slightly old post I have a similar problem. When I bought my maxima the odometer was broken and the mileage hasn't changed during several years of driving it. It's a 1996 se so the odometer is mechanical. To spray it with wd40 would I have to take out the entire driver side console like in the directions to replace the bulbs behind the gauges? Has anyone had any luck with getting a stuck/broken odometer to work again?
I've ignored the lack of the odometer in the past but now I'd really like to get it working again so I can figure out my gas mileage without mapping out all my driving on google maps. If fixing the odometer doesn't seem likely is there something relatively inexpensive (less than $200) I can buy to help track mileage?
Thanks, Michael

The answer is always different. My cluster did the same stuff when the gear-driven speed sensor started to get crunched up inside the tranny. But sometimes is the wiring, sometimes it's the connections from the wiring to the gauges, sometimes it's the gauge cluster itself. All of these will cost different to pay a shop to find/fix it.
To start I would pull the cluster, clean the trip set, and look for loose screws or wires.
