This was posted on the SE-R list, and others agreed, the model supports it. This might be our (AWD or RWD variant) Maxima in our future.

hey the master tech at work recently went to a class to learn about the new
nissans and said that it looks like the new altima has a place for a drive
shaft to go( something along those lines). he said they might offer it in
rear or maybe all wheel drive in later years. im not saying this is
definate, but it is a possibility. i think that would be awesome, and awd
3.5 altima would kick ***

Since it's the XVL platform, it would have to have the space for the driveshaft. I think this new platform is the basis for the Z and the new GT-R too. At least they are all using the VQ35DE.

If the tunnel in offset, it's probably for an AWD version. It's the current trend nowdays. Nissan already has a tranny for it. They can probably use a version from the Pulsar GTI from Japan. FWD to AWD has been done by Jaguar already. Contour FWD to AWD Jaguar x-type. The interesting thing is making a awd vehicle w/ the engine still in it's transverse position.
