Are they just dirty? What's the stuff on the edges, etc.?

what stuff on the edges? with the flash it shines through the "grille" and shows the plastic support pieces underneath.

Okay that's what I was wondering.

Is removal of the rear deck necessary to get these installed? If so, I think you can count me out. I don't really have the time to be doing that for two measly speaker covers.

They do screw in from the bottom, I dont think you can access it from inside the trunk. So you probably need to remove the rear deck, unless you use soemthing else to hold them in place.
