releasing fuel pressure, car stays running....HELP

OK, so I got 3 new o-ring kits for the front 3 injectors and some petroleum jelly. I pulled the fuel pump fuse and started car, it died, started again, ran few seconds, died, started again and it ran at 600-900 rpms for 2 minutes, then I shut it off...what is going on? should I just keep the fuse pulled and keep letting it run? seems like a long time to run especially going between 600-900 the entire time. idle sounds like an old school muscle car tho. Thanks

You could idle it until it dies. It shouldn't take too much longer. Put at this point most of the fuel and the pressure should be dissipated, so I wouldn't worry about it. On one occasion I forgot to run the fuel out of the system before removing the injectors. In that case, I just loosened the hose clamp around the fuel rail, put a rag on it and popped it off. For all accounts and purposes, you should be fine. Start tearing her down...

let it run til it dies with the fuse out.
if it runs after that you have other issues to worry about.

what are the possible other issues? bad fuel pump or something?

Sometimes it takes a little while to relieve all the fuel pressure. Just keep running the car until it wont run anymore.

Lets not create problems that do not exist yet.

ok so it finally died, i got the front fuel rail pretty much out. The #6 injectors pintle cap or whatever its called, the plastic thing at the tip...seems to stick out of the fuel rail more than the other 2....is that bad?

VE. it was off by about 1/16th of an inch...i was able to tap the plastic cap on closer, maybe that plastic thing was blocking the spray pattern?, more work to do...

How does their seating look relative to eachother when looking at the top of the fuel rail?

they are seated all the way...
but the # 6 on the bottom was stick a bit out, i tap that in more....and the #2 and #4 injectors had the small orings shredded....maybe me pulling off? idk. all 3 are getting replaced now with some good ol petroleum jelly and new o-rings....should i lube the gasket/ring that goes below the fuel rail?

I think green is right, that #6 thing not being all the way on there was a gap for the o-ring, it was probably the problem, and i prolly shredded the other 2 o-rings taking off... or is Beck/arnely not a good idea for o-rings? those are ones i used 2 years ago. Thanks so much guys. off to finish her up.

so bolting them in switching back and forth 1/2 a turn at a time is no good? BTW I got bolts instead of them soft screws, easier for future work.

I always twist them in, this prevents the o'rings from getting pinched.

ok reinstalled everything. started her up...now im seeing white smoke and kind of a put put at exhaust...Is that normal? idle seems steady tho. when i rev it, it doesnt seem as smooth as it should be, and lots of white smoke comes out, almost has a blue tint to it...but that would be oil. there was no smoke after start up before...

So I pulled the first 1 I put in as i screwed it in. the bottom o-ring was cracked. so i replaced with new one, lubd and pushed/twisted it in as far as i could and tightened it up slowly and evenly. started up....still white smoke, exhaust is condensating more than it use to, but ive seen brand new cars driving and as they pull away from a light water comes out of their tailpipe....

Been reading around, white smoke means blown head gasket? how could that of happened changing front 3 injectors? it only blew black smoke on start at beginning. now no black smoke, white smoke as it idles and more when i rev it. even when car is warm.

Let it sit for 20minutes, went and started it, no smoke on start, then slowly slowly it started to push out white smoke again. so I drove around the block, and it seemed to drive fine except it looked like i just put seafoam in. more i got on the gas more smoke belowed out. I dont know what to do know. All I did was replace the o-rings on front 3 injectors, didn't take anything apart but that air tube above them.

I was thinking...when I pulled the injectors i got sprayed a bit on first injector i pulled out, maybe excess fuel poored into the cylinders as i removed injectors and all this fuel is being burnt off? I let car idle for about 15minutes and its still smoking, more as it revs

Sounds like you were very generous with the vasoline..

Drive it around for a while until all of it burns out.

drove around for a bit, since not many people on the road. It didn't start right up, not sure if the lube had to do with this. but car drives very nice, gets up and goes great. hard to tell how much smoke what color etc with tint and darkness outside. but when I got home i shut it off, then started it right back up very nicely, and its hard to tell but didn't see very much smoke at all. and normally after this many starts i could swipe my finger in there and it would get black, no carbon now...

should I run some more seafoam to burn all this carbon out now im not leaking fuel?

My first post after lurking for almost a year and I have to say that this was the stroke of genius I needed.

I can honestly say I lubed the skit out of my injector after having pinched it once already and on my third removal job in three days and it smoked white for almost half an hour and trickled down to just a tad. Got it out on the road and got up to speed for a two mile round trip and voila.

Thank you Greeny! I was about to tear it down again and this saved me from ruining a perfectly good install.

When releasing fuel pressure, make sure you remove the fuel filler cap. If the car has been sitting in the sun heating the fuel tank up, the engine will have enough fuel pressure to idle. Remove the cap and it shouldn't fire up more than a few times.
