never done electrical work before, how do you check a fuse?

can someone give me pretty simple instructions on how to check a fuse? i'm trying to find out what's wrong w/ my cel 1008. i've done simple maintenance (oil change, spark plugs, etc...) but never done anything electrical.

here are the instructions that i'm following

Check fuse #58 (10 amps) and replace if necessary.

what will i need to check? and where do i find the fuse box?

I don't know if I'd call changing a fuse electric work, but the fusebox is under the dash and here's how you do it

easy way:
get a test light ($10 tops for a cheap one)
connect the clip side of test light to ground (most any unpainted metal on the car)
touch tip of light to each side of the fuse.

if both sides light up the test light the fuse should still be good.

There are a few fuse boses. The one you have posted a picture of is under the hood. Usually when they say check a fuse they literally mean, just pull it and check if it's blown.

Pop the hood, locate the fuse box (most likely on the drivers side of the engine bay), pop the cover, and pull the fuse. Look at it to see if the metal wire inside is still intact. If it is the fuse is good. This doesn't prove the circuit is good but does prove the fuse is good.

What is CEL code 1008? People may be able to help you more.

easiest way to check a fuse go buy a new one for .25 and replace. The pics of the good fuse bad fuse are helpfull. I will state that you have to look very close at the metal strip, sometimes it will pop the metal down by the base of the fuse and that can be a real bugger to see.

It is not always as easy as just looking at it. I use an ohm meter. If you have "infinity" rsisitance, it is blown. If you have "0" resistance, it is good.

Correct....if blown, the circuit is "open" and will have infinite resistance. If the fuse is good, it is a "short" and will have no resistance.

Kind of like checking a lightbulb in your house....look at the "filament".
