So after searching all week on the fourms... I think I have just about enough of write ups to start this job... I have had this issue since I put my new exhaust on and irrc it was a p1402 code...

Anyone care to add anything else? I only looked up 2 write ups, and I pretty much bumped them to the first page... I hope I can get this done tomorrow cause it is gonna be 55 degrees here in Newengland and only for 1-2 days at most...

Someone said in a write up that I had to take off the intake plenum chamber(runners) is that true? Cause I really wanna get into that much work in one day cause I kinda need my car cause I am doing the work at my friends house with my tools and i can't at my apartment.

Well, now that that's out of the way.... The most thorough approach would be to remove the plenum and give everything a thorough cleaning (including as much of the upper IM as you possibly can, while you're at it). If you end up doing this be very careful with the heater core hoses on the passenger side running into the firewall. Chances are that the plastic neck has become very brittle and it will snap if you try to twist the hose off to access the rear manifold bolts on that side. That error on my part cost me $375 to have a new heater core installed a few months ago . Also, be sure that your gaskets are in good shape as the last thing you want is a bunch of vac leaks after you reassemble everything .

There is a thread in which people have cleaned the EGR port through removal of the IACV. But it looks like this doesn't allow for thorough cleaning of the guide tube. If you haven't checked it out already:

From my experience, I can say that the lower bolts on the EGR guide tube WILL give you complete and utter hell (mainly the bolt closer to the firewall). I've read that you can avoid this by pushing the big tube out of the way, but I didn't want to take the chance of somehow cracking that. What I ended up doing was taking a close quarters hacksaw to part of the bolt so that I could slip a wrench over it and remove it. After doing that + lots of PB blaster, I finally got it out. I don't really recommend the hacksaw thing. Good luck man...

i couldnt even budge my egr pipe to get it out of the way for that bolt. iirc i think i just happen to get my socket on there a do a 1\8 turn thing. defently was testing my paitience.

 

You're right about that! After taking about 20 minutes to hack off part of the bolt, I managed to get the open end wrench over the nut. I was only able to get like 1/8 of a turn before having to take the wrench off, put it back onto the nut and go for another 1/8. That process continued for what felt like 3 years. For me, I think removal of the old EGR pipe was hands down the most annoying, swear-inducing part of the entire 00vi swap

 

lol now i remeber what i had to do.. i remeber i couldnt get that nut off the thread(the one by the rear firewall) for the egr cause the egr tube was right there and i couldnt even budge the one off the exhaust manifold nor i didnt have the tool to remove it from the exhaust manifold. thats when the good ole saw zaw came out.

If you remove the UM i would buy new vaccum hoses. IMO it would make it alot easier. Those things can be a pain to get off nipples. and they can snap crack ect ect

 

you dont have to hack off any bolts. you have to remove the studs holding the large pipe in place. thats why you dont use any penetrating lube and hope hte stud and nut comes out together instead of the nut coming off alone. if the nut comes off alone, you use an 8mm socket to remove the stud. once that is one, it is simple to pry the large pipe out of the way enough to use a wrench and not a socket (although you can get a socket on there too).
