Exhaust System Project on 98 GLE

So I just bought my y-pipe today. And I tested out a friend's car with the same y-pipe and intake. His car is pretty loud compared to stock. But from what he said its the intake that gives the really loud noise. Y-pipe still however makes quite a bit of noise compared to stock, but atleast there is no bees . What i want to do is make an exhaust system that is not louder than stock but i want the additional hp of the y-pipe. Can you guys help me out by giving me suggestions on where to put resonators, what type of tailpipe, b-pipe to add to reduce sound but still have that power. Thanks Guys.

1. When you add a Y, you wont get stock sound.

2. Cattman B and A33 rear.

I have a Budget Y, magnaflow hi flow cat (only changed the cat because my oem cat was rusted through), stock B pipe and and 5th gen muffler. The Y will obviously make it slightly louder than stock, but it's barely noticeable. I prefer things to be quiet, and I think the car sounds perfect with my current setup (although I'm thinking about getting an upgraded B pipe over the summer).

If you're thinking of going a similar route, I can try to get you a sound clip of my car so you can get an idea of how it sounds.

Edit- Didn't see your very first sentence that said you actually already bought the Y pipe.

That would be very kind of you, sir So i guess, Did changeing the muffler make a difference? The only other thing i plan to change is the tip, But that is just the look right? shouldnt affect performance or noise ? something like this

I bought the y-pipe today, but still in box, haven't installed it yet. waitin for nissan to get my gaskets. ALso wanted to wait to see what else i should add to exhaust to do it all at one time.

MOHF what does the a33 rear do? and the b-pipe is supposed to add an extra 5hp correct? does it add noise though? and i remember reading that its hard to buy just the bpipe alone.

By a33 rear, he just meant the 5th gen muffler. Budget had a group deal going on their B pipes, but I'm pretty sure that's done by now. When I do upgrade my B pipe, I'll probably get one from Budget. I'm thinking it will add a little more noise over the stock B. Budget's site looks to have changed. They can now be found here:

http://thewrx.netfirms.com/lss/frame.htm

you might be able to find a sound clip of it in this thread, but I haven't looked through it:

My last setup was quiet, with a 'slight' growl upon throttle, mostly above 3k rpm: Budget Y and B Pipes (B Pipe has a resonator), stock muffler, stock cat, and aftermarket tip. This was with stock intake.

Yesterday I added my CAI, and I couldn't hear a difference until really getting on it/ accelerating fast. Cruising, it's just like with a stock intake. But the roar at WOT is great.

So, for you, you may just want a Y pipe, B pipe, leave stock muffler or get the A33 and call it good. And leave the stock intake.

yea i dont think im going to put in a CAI as much as i luv that race car sound from a CAI , i prefer my car to be quiet so yea i think im going to get the cat back from vibrant as it should go well with my ypipe(same brand) i think its better then mixing it up with budget catback. but then again the catback will come with an aftermarket muffler aswell hmmm. how much is the a33 ?

From what I remember to have read on here, any catback combined with a Y-pipe will be loud.
Someone else please enlighten him/me about this.

Pretty much correct. You are going to get a lot of different arguments on this subject. Y-pipe with stock exhaust is probably the quietest option. If you want quiet, forget the intake. When I first installed my intake, people thought my car had aftermarket exhaust when it was stock. Big sound difference.

whats the point of changeing muffler and b-pipe for a 4th gen without the y-pipe? from what i understand the y-pipe gives the most hp gain for the 4th gen from exhaust mod. Also from what i understand putting in resonator will help with sound but it will still be louder than stock.

Never mind all... I figured it out on my own. I was watching a gently used, OEM, 5th gen muffler on eBay that was ending soon and needed the answer quick. Looks like I'll have some welding to do and I'll be cutting the bumper on my I30t but it's all worth the hassle since the muffler only set me back $9.99!

1.An a33 rear means the muffler off a 5th gen(2000-2003).
2.by putting in after market exhaust parts you are not adding HP but simply allowing your engine to breath better this in turn reads on a dyno that you have more HP, but really you did not add HP to your engine. you are allowing it to use what it's got better.
3. a way to add HP is to put better performing parts in the engine it's self

the point was because i like the way the fifth gen muffler looks than the 4th gen,i also like the way it sounds better as well. plus there is a horrible crimp in teh stock b pipe which i wanted to eliminate while giving the car a nice tone so i did 2.5" from the cat to the muffler without the resonator. also, i dont think i will put a "y pipe" on my car that is not equal length.

I think this thread should be locked. this topic has been beaten to death time and time again. Now that search function is available to everyone i suggest searching for hours and finding all the answers youll ever need because they are infact here.

For instance, a simple belt or exhaust driven intake.

Like a snail?

Rockart, a glasspack is a type of resonator/muffler. Ive never used one personally but they act as decent resonators and are cheap. Just dont use it by themselves.
