Serpentine belt: is my idler pulley stuck in place?

I'm attempting to re-install my serpentine belt after replacing my alternator. I was able to remove the belt by unbolting the ac compressor, then I removed the belt. Now, when I am trying to re-install the belt after the alternator and ac compressor are secured, The belt seems too short. I am now thinking my pulley adjuster thing may not be functioning? I turned the adjuster thing both ways to each extreme and I can not get the serpentine belt back on.

What am I doing wrong?

after you loosen the idler pulley bolt, you have to manually move the pulley up and down. the bolt loosens so it CAN be moved...it doesnt actually move it.

There are two (2) nuts on the idler pulley that need to be loosened. The first one is the nut on the front of the idler pulley. Use a 12mm box end wrench to remove it. Then loosen the long adjustment nut on top of the pulley. I believe it is also a 12mm nut. This will allow the idler pulley to move freely. It takes about three or four minutes and is far easier than fooling around with the compressor.

Now that makes senses. I did not touch the nut on the side. I'll give it a try. Thanks!
