Serpentine belt: is my idler pulley stuck in place?
Serpentine belt: is my idler pulley stuck in place?
I'm attempting to re-install my serpentine belt after replacing my alternator. I was able to remove the belt by unbolting the ac compressor, then I removed the belt. Now, when I am trying to re-install the belt after the alternator and ac compressor are secured, The belt seems too short. I am now thinking my pulley adjuster thing may not be functioning? I turned the adjuster thing both ways to each extreme and I can not get the serpentine belt back on.
What am I doing wrong?

There are two (2) nuts on the idler pulley that need to be loosened. The first one is the nut on the front of the idler pulley. Use a 12mm box end wrench to remove it. Then loosen the long adjustment nut on top of the pulley. I believe it is also a 12mm nut. This will allow the idler pulley to move freely. It takes about three or four minutes and is far easier than fooling around with the compressor.
