Fuel Induction and Power Steering Fluid Check

HI,
I went to the Maxima dealership today and they gave me a bunch of referral for maintence on my 97 Max GXE. They said I could use a fuel induction cleaning. It sounds suspect, supposely it will increase gas mileage, because my car has so much carbon build up it has 121,000 miles. They also said my power steering fluid is dirty. How can I check to see if my power steering fluid is dirty? I just want to double check the dealership recommendation the power steering fluid flush is $90 and the fuel induction cleaning is 140.00. I just want to see what ya'll think out there in Maximaland to see how honest my Maxima dealership is really keeping it.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Peace,

Akbar

Fuel induction, eh??? You mean fuel injection

What are they going to do for $140?? We need specific info....... I'd just buy a quality fuel injector cleaner at the store and dump it in your gas tank and call it a day. But more importantly, how is your gas mileage? Measure it, and if it's within spec, don't do anything. More than likely the dealer is just trying to make a buck off of you.

As for the power steering fluid, the price is just a little high. It's not a bad idea to flush the PS fluid with the miles you have, but it's not necessary. I believe if you read the owner's manual, PS fluid is not a maintenance item.

A real tune-up consists of changing the oil, spark plugs, PCV valve etc.....

buy a bottle of redline si-1 or gummout regaine (in the clear bottle) for a fuel injector cleaning. your PS fluid is supposed ot be ATF. open the resevoir and smell it. it is smells burned or if it is dark (and not ATF pink/red) then you should flush it. you can do that easily and thoroughly yourself. the ps flush will cost you the total of 2 bottle of AF fluid and about 10 minutes and can be done by the newest of mechanics. avoid the dealershio

the fuel INDUCTION service they are speaking of is a product from BG. http://www.bgprod.com/products/fuelair.html you install the machine into the fuel rail, pull the fuel pump and run the detergents through the fuel system, add the additive to the fuel tank and you're done. There was a study done and BG 3 part fuel induction service is one of the only things on the market that is PROVEN to increase fuel mileage.

the the power steering system flush is another machine made by BG which puts a detergent into your p/s system. you turn the wheel a few times to get all the cleaner in, then add new p/s fluid from the machine. They also have a cooling system cleaner, brake system cleaner. and a few others.

For the PS system, use the link in the stickies. You use a turkey baster, and suck the old fluid out amd add new. Do it a couple of times, and you will be good to go!

Just follow the maintenance schedule in the back of your owner's manual and you can't go wrong. Skip the "recommendations" from the Dealer.

I know this is old but when i read the sticky it said to take the hose but its hard to do so as i try to figure how to get the rest out. So should i take out the regular power steering from the res. then put in the atf, turn the wheel a couple of times, and then flush again, and do it like 3 times maybe?
