Am i screwed? time for a new tranny?
Am i screwed? time for a new tranny?
Okay so basically this is what happened:
The car was driven with NO tranny fluid for about 150 feet. It slipped a few times and then worked for about 70% of the very short ride. The rpm was kept below 2500 and the slipping was not extremely harsh. After this the vehicle was immediately turned off untill the original fluid that was accidentally taken out was put back in. The tranny seems okay it was driven gently but zero slipping occured (after fluid is in) it went from 1-2-3 multiple times with success.
Is my transmission going to be okay? Or is it going to be royally ****ed soon? I have to drive 220 miles tomorrow and its 90% highway driving at around 80-90MPH. Should i make it? And will it be okay if i change the fluid in about 500 miles?
For the record my transmission is an auto with 63,300 miles on it. It has been serviced on time and properly untill now.
And will spirited driving hurt my tranny for the time being? Normally the car is subjected to fast driving and pedal to the floor accelerating but before this incident I have had no problems but the maintence was done properly and on time.

Will have to drive and see. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you fry the clutches.
Hopefully they don't look like these:

**** now you have me scared. Im taking counrty roads and highways so i can't afford to break down. I guess the best bet is to baby the car. Educated guesses are much welcome at this pont. And if there are any tips that could help me so i have less of a chance of breaking down, i would love to hear them!

It's got new trans fluid in it? Drive it around for a half hour or so, then check the fluid and see how it looks. If you can, personally I'd also drop the pan and look for unusual amounts of clutch material residue.
Why was it driven so long without fluid? My guess is a quick oil change shop went for the wrong drain plug...

Yeah you got the jist of the madness. It was pure accident. It was driven at maximum a quarter of a block and no more than 200 feet. but the old fluid was put back in after the driving (it was not mixed with engine oil or anything). I am required to leave early morning tomorrow so i cant really look at it. But I assumed that it would be best to put the old stuff back in it. I can put in some new stuff but i think it would be best to stick with the older fluid?
Still, check to see if it's burnt up (color and/or smell). If it looks pretty bad, best to just park it for now until you get the chance to drop the pan and take look at it.
If it doesn't slip at all (and I'd definitely drive the hell out of it before you actually need it to be dependable) then it may very well be okay. Like I said; pure luck either way.
Actually it was getting there but it has some time. And it was not the shop.....
The only real test is going to get gas, then i have to leave haha. So prey for me folks lol.
But I really dont have time to check out the car. I still have to pack ****. I have heard rumors that old tranny fluid is better to have if your on the verge of not going anywhere.
