My Max on 17's...Finally!

Thanks again to those who helped me out with the wheel problem i had. Here is a pic of her sitting on them.

Looks pretty good... what size tires are those? They just look small for some reason.

Those are 40's....i am going to get some 50's tho. I think they will feel a lil better not to mention make the car look a lil bit more beefy! YEA!

make sure you keep the same size total tire rim height as factory unless u want to through out the suspension with running over sized tires on your rims. take and measure the factory rim with factory tire height from the ground all the way to the top of the rim. then match the rims u have now with tires that will give it the same height as the factories had.

It's easier than that. Everytime you go up a wheels size come down a tire hieght. Example: Your car probably came on stock 15s w/60 profiles if you put some 16s on you will of course go with some 50s and so on.

yup yup. over sizing rims & tires will only mess up ur suspension u have weather its stock or not. unless u plan on air bagging it or using hydraulics then thats a totally different story.

if thats the case, my speedo should be right on... 205/50/16 and my speedo is 5 off at 70(reads 75).

bump the profile up to 60 or use 235-245mm tires to fix that. your OD is a whopping 5.6% too small!!! killing your MPGs too. those tires will run on a camry, whose stock size is P195/70R14

there is a tire calculator in the wheels and tires section.

stock size is 205/65/15

once you know that, you can figure out what size tire is best. For 17s, it is 235/45/17

yeah i used a size calculator (miata.net or something) to make that list of compatible sizes 2 posts up. comes in pretty handy. but that list shows every size that one would concievably need to know... very few 3rd genners that i know of have opted for 19" or higher, and very few that i know of went wider than 245mm.

hey guys so if im getting 6th gen rims for my 91 se what tire size would be the best? should I wait to do suspension and any lowering till after I install my new rims or do suspension first?

Pick none. The narrower, higher the tires, the easier the ride it is for all. I cant figure a place (except track) where smbdy could get away from me by driving - with my current 195 15. Easy ride is best...

Main issue in that opinion is: I am already a family man (no hunting), no need burn rubber but to commute, cuttin through snow is the main factor...

heh, well your world is a bit different than ours. you're SEVERAL degrees farther north than even the canadian border, i think, so your winters are much colder. which causes you to equip your car in whatever way will work best for you in your climate. in the northern US, it snows a lot, but down where i live (~37*30'00"N) it hardly ever snows.

You should think of your suspension as a complete system. Your suspension modes need to be purhased with the wheels and tires you plan to use in mind. It is the total PACKAGE that will make up your ride, handling, braking and MPG.

So it would be best to do wheels and tires at the same time you do the rest of your mods. That way you only have to do an alignment once.

Just installed summer tires.

Std worn grooved hiway, long summer trip with 240=terriblese. No feelings but pure mechanics. The wider & harder the rubber, the more correction-steering needed, more noise, bumps... this is really tire-some on long trips. ---> the narrower rubber, the easier handling. WYSIWYG.

i misquoted my tire size... its 205/55 16. but it shouldnt be off by that much(granted, off, but not enough to justify 3-4 @60, 5-6@70...
(next time i need tires, ill need spacers for wider tires(less than 1/2 in from rear strut ) or just taller tires...)

OK thanks that helps. So once I have my wheels (6th gen 18's), should I just go to les swchaab? or family mechanic? where can i go to get my "whole PACKAGE" including suspension, wheels, and tires. So everything sits perfect, and looks flawless?

so 235/45/17 is the best tire for 17s?
the list above your post makes it seem as 215/50/17 arethe closest match.

im running 215/50/17 on mine and it seems fine except i cant turn completely and fully left without some wheel rub. seems like i can turn fully right without rub tho, or maybe its vice versa, i know it only rubs one way.

should i be lookin for 235/45/17 next time i get new rubber? possible the 215/50/17 are giving me less mpg? and causing the wheel rub?

was checking out the tire calculator from discount tire.

wouldn't 235/45/17 tires be wider? that would cause more wheel rub wouldn't it? although that size is very close to stock size, the calculator i was using showed the 215/50/17 to be even closer:

They are both very close as far as speedo goes, but the 215/50/17 seem like a better match to me.

I like your rims alot, look good on the car. the rubber seems smaller than it should tho. drop that car just a bit and it will look very clean. nice choice

i have 235 40 17 tires w/ a 1.6 inch drop f&r, the fronts rub big time, i just had to replace the front pair of tires, that were only 2months old. Come to find out, i had to get an alignment kit, which i purchased already thru stillen, so it should be here today. There's no rubbing in the rear, even with my 120+ Lbs subs/sub box setup. Unless your dropped as myself and a few other members on here, i dont think you would have to worry about rubbing issues with this size.

The reason why i determined i needed the camber kit is because a good friend of mine has a 93 3rdGen; fully modded and dropped, he's on dropzone springs and when i told him about my tires, he had the same issues in the past. With installing the camber kit, that problem went away immediately, hasnt changed tires due do any camber issues in a very long time. I trust his word 'cas, he's had that car for over 9 yrs or so? He's done just about all the cosmetic mods and performance mods you could buy, without any serious extra work to get them functioning properly. The car is in MINT condition, inside and out.

Oddly, a another good friend of mine, has a 3rd Gen with 19 inch chromes, never seen a sign of rubbing on any of his tires, also he chopped his stock springs a good 2 inches off? if i remember right, although i advised him many times not too.

225 50 17 fills my wheel well nice. I switched to 235 45 17 just to try it out. All u need now is a drop and u`ll be ok.
