My car is hot!!! It's on FIRE!!!

Seriously, it was on fire.
I started it up, noticed the abnormal squeaking noise, popped the hood, and saw the smoke.
Turned off engine, saw a little flame inside and the flame got bigger and bigger...... Brother ran to get water to put it off.

close up

The flame was inside the cover, with the copper coils.

What's that thing called?

I had belts replaced at the dealer about 1 month ago.
The starter was replaced also about 2 weeks ago.

Is there any possibility that those works were not done right and caused this?

What's wrong with me and max......? First one got totaled, and the second got on fire........ Sigh.........

Fried your alternator. Check into getting it replaced.

I hope you have a 97, and it's covered under the recall. Call Nissan and ask about it.

Don't buy it at the dealer, go to a parts store or if your not putting it in yourself go to a local repair shop. It will be cheaper.

The new starter is only 2 weeks old. Do you think it's related?

No. The starter is on the other side of the engine.

They tested it, started up for 15sec, and smoking~~~~
Took the alternator off, the rectifier was the problem, at least that's what they said.....
Anyway, ordered a new part....... Thanks for the help, guys..... I knew it's alternator before I went talk to them so that I would not be ripped off.

This is correct. My brother had his replaced. Make sure you check your wiring too. He had to make his own ground from the battery to the alternator because it fried his ground too.

Same exact scenario that happened to my alternator. Except, I turned off the car walked inside and then my fiance's younger brother told me my car was smoking. Opened up the hood and there was a flame on my alternator and mine is a 95.
