Just got this 98 5-spd SE, take a look (Lots of Pics)

1998 SE 5-Spd with 122XXX miles. Babied on the inside. everything seems to be bone stock.

alright so some of you may have already read that i know very little about cars and that this is my first.
i just finished up my first year of college and finally had enough saved up to buy this sweet thing =) ($3000)

i bought it off some random guy and his reason for selling was that he already had 2 other cars (01 jeep cherokee and 97? sentra) and that he couldn't really afford to keep paying for insurance on three cars so he decided to sell this one seeing that gas prices are the way they are.
he showed me a bunch of receipts showing me a bunch of stuff that had been changed and what not, paperwork said he spent about $600 on a general tune up ( it was a list of about 10 or so things).

so i've had the car for about a week and everything seems to run fine (but then again, i don't know much). as far as gas goes looks like i'll be getting about 20mpg.

and, here's a list of things i plan to do as i get some cash: (keep in mind i have to pay for college and everything else this car brings as far as expenses go all by myself. i get paid $7.50 and hour for about 25-35 hrs per week)
in no particular order except for the first 8)

-first and foremost, apply maxima.org sticker =) (im always on the lookout for other members every time i see another maxima, but then i only see 50 or so year olds driving them =( )
-repaint Superblack
-change the lights all around, clear turn signals (already ordered), clean and sand? headlights, change foglight covers, swap tail lights for red/clear ones.
-maybe get new bulbs? idk though.
-fix spolier (it's coming off on passenger's side)
-replace the springs/struts/shocks ( one or the other or all?) previous owner said it was one thing he hadn't done he thought i should.
-lower it to a normal height LOL, i only noticed how hight it actually was after i took some pics of it.
-realign (seems to drift to the right on it's own)
-do something about all the rust.
-get recalled alternator changed at Nissan
-get Nissan to look at keyless entry, already tried reprogramming, no luck there.
-maybe get the windows tinted
-clean/replace/maintenance: IAC/TB, knock sensor, O2 sensor (no i haven't gotten the codes for either of them yet), air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs

well i think thats about it for now haha. if i do get all this done it'll be over the course of the next year or so little by little.

here are a bunch of random pics. Notice all the rust under the car.

It [rpobably aint smart to hit the .org while drunk but frrom the looks of it I think your CV boots are spewing shiz all over and under that transmission seems a bit gunky. Any play int he CV joints where they meet the trans? Bad diff bearings maybe, and might want to check the transmission oil considering most of it might have come out under the car but other than that I think

well i know it doesn't leak onto the floor at all, it's garage kept now and the floor is always dry. as far as there being play between the CV and where it meets the transmission, i don't think so?

Let me give you a tip before you get started.

Get the mechanical stuff and rust looked over before doing anything cosmetic. Rust is your enemy.

Good luck with the car!

- that tranny wetness is probably the rear main seal. those seem to go bad often on our cars.

- and yea the oil on the boot does not look good. i would get that looked at.

- watch the rust as well, but there is not much you can to do prevent it without just swapping in a new part.

- dont even bother painting your car. a good paintjob will cost 1500 or more. if anything just get good at waxing/claybar, and also remove your pinstripe.
i would rather see you spend your money on performance or maintenance jobs.

otherwise nice find. 3k for an SE with 122k is a good price. and from someone else who was a total noob 6 months ago, WELCOME TO THE ORG.

welcome to the org. nice ride at a good price.

if you are only making $7.50/hr then just stick with the maintenance stuff - paint and lights can wait.

and check what was done for $600 - you don't want to change plugs/filters if they were changed already.

g/l with it.

yea the car's performance was already a priority over it's look for me. i think it just really needs to get painted though, i didn't get a pic of the hood and how the paint is practically peeling right off really badly.

thanks so far guys.

definitely get the mechanical stuff done first like others have suggested... and when you get time here and there over the summer try to get into some diy maintenance that probably has never been done (clean tb, etc). after i got mine last summer i did everything i could and at 150k+ it runs awesome...
