anyone know how to flush wiper fluid?

ridiculous question indeed.

i have been trying for months to dilute my washer fluid. whoever owned the car before me put some kind of concentrated washer fluid in my reservoir, and when i try to just stick the hose in there and overflow it till it's diluted, the concentrated stuff just sinks, and all that is overflowing is the water i'm pouring in there.

or i could be wrong...it almost seems like the washer fluid is boiling (which would do the opposite of diluting), because every time i check it, it's way low. and i don't mean "i used some on the way home" low, i mean i haven't used any and there's no reason for it to be below 100% full. i think i need to completely empty it and start over, but how do i do that?

did i miss something in newbie training, or is this abnormal????

the fluid is too concentrated, too thick. kinda like i'm squirting dish soap. it doesn't clean my windshield like it should. it's kinda like i have to get out and rinse it off after i use it lol. i mean it is like royal blue, instead of a light blue like it should be. i would get a pic, but you wouldn't be able to tell.

i will tell you this though...when i add water to it, i see the blue concentrate rise up, and then sink back down, instead of mixing with the water. gawd i sound like a newbie. i wish i could show you lol. i just wanna know how to empty it, and refill it for myself...peace of mind i suppose

edit: no, there's no leak. but it seems like there is, or that something is causing it to boil the water out or something.

How far does it leak down to? The neck of the resoviour only snaps into the lower portion which is inside your fenderwell so maybe its seeping out of the neck joint. You may not notice it leaking there since it's slow enough and will evaporate before it will cause a noticable drip on the driveway.

lol i don't know if i'm being clear. there's 2 separate problems.......

one) the water is way too concentrated, and no matter how many times i try to dilute it, the water and concentrate won't mix together, so i need to figure out a way to flush it out and start over.

two) it kinda seems like the water level goes down too quickly, but it's not leaking anything. almost like for some reason it has been boiling?

I've never had problems with my windshield wiper fluid or reservoir, but if I were you I would see if there is a way to disconnect the fluid lines and route them to dump into jars or a bucket. Then refill with some new fluid and see if that fixes it-maybe yours is just too old?

You can buy a plastic hose from Home Depot to drain the fluid. Any left over fluid can be squirted out via the wiper nozzle. If you are patient, just run the wiper multiple times until the fluid is empty. Don't know if you could burn out the pump if you run it continuously for too long. You can also aim the car wash spray gun in the reservoir and fire away.

Yes. Removal of the reservoir will take you 5 minutes once you remove your wheel, remove a few screws holding the inner wheel well black plastics, then pull the black plastics out of the way. 15 minute job at most.

Sounds to me like someone poured Glass cleaner like windex into the resevoir. I agree I would remove the resevoir and just rinse it out as much as possible. Maybe pour some of that wax/tar removal stuff in there, swirl it around and rinse thoroughly. Also you can fill it and check for leaks while your at it.

Glass cleaner can swell up seals and rubber hoses, maybe even eat through the rubber washer hose.

LOLZ! after i drained the fluid and smelled it, i figured out what the problem was. someone decided to put car wash concentrate in the wiper fluid reservoir!!!

just in case this thread gets searched, here's what i did...

pop the cap off the fluid filler, reach your hand down to where the gooseneck and the reservior join, and pull it off. you should be looking directly into your reservoir. remove the 2 wheel well screws right under where the windshield wiper fluid reservoir is. (if you pop your hood and look up through the holes, you can easily see where the reservoir is) there is a black rubber hose at the bottom of the reservoir pointed towards (IIRC) the passenger side fender (it may be towards the rear of the car). simply pull this hose off, let the fluid drain (into a 2 liter bottle if you're eco-conscious lol), which may take a while...put the garden hose in the reservior (to rinse it out), when it's almost empty put the hose back snug to the bottom of the reservoir. pull the wiper lever to flush anything out of the nozzles that was in the system. give it a few seconds. slap the gooseneck back in the top, fill the fluid up (mine took EXACTLY one entire jug lol), snap the cap back in, put the 2 screws back in, done.

thanks for the replies though

Open the cap as if you were gonna fill up the reservoir, remove the filtration screen if its still there, take the pistol nozzle off your garden hose, shove it deep into the gooseneck, blast the cold water, go enjoy a pint of Guinness, fart, then come back to fill it up with regular washer fluid. Or, possibly remove the motor which pumps the juice to the nozzles and let the fluid leak out the bottom while rinsing thoroughly with the garden hose once again.

Good advice, but you're a little late to the party.

Use a pin or needle to clean out the nozzles.

already did that wizard...I just need to go out and get a pair of new ones. After i thought i cleaned them out I guess all i really did was just push it more in the nozzle cause Im getting 2 sprays per hole instead of one. I can see the contact water marks when I hit the spray lever. thanks for the input though
