I have a buddy with a '98 I30t and the clock flickers on and off and doesn't hold time (even on the same trip after being set). Is there an internal battery that keeps time when the car is off? Could it be a wiring issue?

Curious if anyone has come across this before....

As far as I know, the clock draws of the battery... it does not have its own battery. Id say its a bad clock.

 

I am having this current problem as we speak,It sometimes stays on then It will reset or It will just flicker and turn off. It's a bad clock,I am asumming that It is old and the heat really gets to It and then It does wierd things.

 

i've opened 1 or 2 up and theres no battery. probably a bad connection but swapping it out would be my choice.

 

My clock had the same symptoms. I ended up taking it out and found that on the some of the pins on the circuit board needed to be resoldered. Before you go on a hunt for a new or used clock, inspect the female adapter for the wiring harness on the circuit board to make sure the solder pins are making a good connection.

 

Although it sucks for you guys I'm glad to see that there are others out there who have come across this issue. As I mentioned, it's not on my car so I can't resolve it as quickly as I would like. I think I will try swapping the clock and inspecting all the connections and I will update to let you guys with worthless clocks know what's up. Thanks.

 

Yeah I had the same issue. My clock won't hold time, and sometimes I wouldn't be thinking and thought I was running really late to work. But yeah I fixed it by swapping it out with another clock, now it works just fine. I took out the clock to see if anything was wrong with it but I didn't see anything after a quick glance.

 

This is a common problem with the clock. There is a bad solder connection in the clock itself that is causing this. After a while the clock will start to fade in and out while you're driving and come back out when you hit bumps or slap the dash above the clock.

I've never figured out which solder connection is the culprit. If you're good with a soldering iron do what I did--resolder everything on the clock. If not, buy a used replacement. They're cheap and you can find somebody here to sell you one or scan the usual auction sites. But, I'd buy from an org member first is there was an option.

The connections for the clock are bad. I had the same problem; I ended up putting my turbo timer there instead.
