Where is the factory alarm main unit located?

I've called Nissan and they told me the main alarm unit is located in the trunk on the driver's side behind the carpet lining. I've looked there and cannot seem to find it. I remember in my Toyota, it was located under the front seat.

Where is it located in a 99 Maxima?

As alset2 said, the FSM seems to indicate the BCM controls the alarm's functions.

What is the BCM?

The reason I asked the original question was because my friend is trading his car in, also a 99 Maxima and I wanted to swap his alarm main unit with mine as my alarm seems to go off at random times. I thought that by swapping the units, I would eliminate this.

Body control module.

It's located directly above the TCM (assuming 4AT), behind the radio.

pmohr-

You seem very knowledgeable on these boards. Some time ago my alarm began to come on
randomly. Sometimes it would go off by simply slightly touching the vehicle. As I cannot have this happen at night, I took the fuse out for the factory alarm. My keyless entry still works but the alarm is disabled, even though my security light still flashes as it did.

I remember a while back my family's Avalon did the same thing. We took the car under warranty to the dealer and they replaced the main alarm unit that was located under the seat. Since my friend is trading his '99 Maxima GLE in, I have the ability to swap any parts I need. Some parts I can just take out without swapping them at all. This is what I wanted to do with the alarm main unit. Now you guys are saying the alarm is controlled through the BCM which seems like a hassle to swap since so many things are connected to it.

What do you think is causing my alarm troubles. Is there something I can swap other than the BCM while I have my friends car at my disposal?

Thanks

I would imagine the BCM software is keyed in to small things, such as whether or not you have keyless entry, auto vs manual, comfort and convenience package (which includes keyless entry and trunk pop), etc.

It's definitely worth a shot, though. Really all you need are a flat head and phillips screwdrivers, and a 10mm socket and ratchet. Shouldn't take but 10 minutes to take the center of the dash apart.

You could also try the MRCU, though I don't believe it does anything other than receive the signal from the keyfob and transmit the signal to the BCM. That's located passenger side of the trunk, behind the lining.

Have you tried the IVMS diagnostics?

IVMS diagnostics? I have no idea what this is. Can you explain the process and where it can be done?

BTW, I see from DCMAX that you're in the Baltimore area...if you'd like to try my '95 BCM, feel free to come down to Jessup. My car's all taken apart anyway.

95-96 and 97-99 are different BCM's
There also different for manual and auto climate controls and keyless or no keyless entry.

It's a huge leap to think the BCM or "main alarm unit" is the problem just because you had that replaced on a different model car. If it was another maxima I'd say you're on the right track.

You might want to start with simple items and work your way up to ripping into your dash and replacing main computer units.

To start--test all of your switches for clean connections and proper operation. That means the hood switch and all 4 door switches.
If you have a touchy switch or one with shorting wires that could easily cause your touchy alarm issues and is much more likely than the BCM failing.

you can buy these from org members or from ebay used.
Search for keyfob.

FTR, I've seen a few blown BCMs.

Also though, there have been several reported incidents of water corroding the trunk switch and causing false signals to the BCM from there.

pmohr-

It may be the trunk switch. The reason for this is because I have not been able to open up the trunk with the key ever since I purchased the vehicle two years ago. It opens fine with the remote and the in cabin trunk release but will not open with the key. I have tried spraying WD-40 and other lubricants into the lock cylinder but that has no effect. When I put the key into the cylinder, it won't even turn. The alarm issue started about 6 months ago. Maybe these two are related and the alarm issue is intermittent.

At this point I don't know as the fuse is out and the alarm has been disabled since.

It's always a possibility that the PO had the trunk re-keyed.

Or, his lock broke and he got one from a junkyard.

How does the trunk have any connection to the alarm system?
Even if the switch to release the trunk shorted out it wouldn't cause the alarm to trigger and there is no alarm switch on the trunk.

Try reading the whole thread (and in context) before you reply, thanks.

Obviously not, by the way you responded.

Let's take this one by one, shall we?

Yes, and quite a **** I am. I said 'thanks', there are much worse ways I could've pointed that out to you. Next time, I won't make an attempt at civility. By the way, please to do try to get the correct information before stating things as truth (such as that the trunk has no relation to the alarm), thanks.
