Factory Leather or After Market Leather?

I am about to buy a 2k2 Maxima SE. I am ordering mine directly from the factory, and I was wondering if there is a difference between factory leather, and after market leather. I have been told by two people that after market leather is better because it is thicker. This means it won't crack as easily, and is softer. However, I am skeptcial because both of these people were Nissan dealers Any input would be very appreciated.

i think for past years of maxima that would be true. ive heard aftermarket leather is many times better than nissan's. however nissan changed leather suppliers this year and the leather that is in the 2002s is supposed to be much thicker than the old leather. i think the factory leather in your 2k2 should be just fine.

By going with aftermarket leather, you can customize it...using different colors, embroidery (sp?) for as much as or even less than the factory leather package. Plus you can sell your cloth seats, so you will get some money back.

How do order a 2k2 SE "directly from the factory"?
And do you get a better price than going through your friendly dealer?

Re: Re: Factory Leather or After Market Leather?

leather seat COVERS will run you about $500-$600 from leatherseats.com I THINK (i havent been there in a while) you wouldnt be able to sell your cloth seats because you will remove the cloth and replace it with the leather. you wont have any extra seats to sell. although the leather package (which includes some other things as well) for the 2k2 is $1499 so you definitely would save yourself some money by getting aftermarket leather if all you want is the leather seats.

Ok, thanks a lot guys. I think that I will try and go after market so that I can maybe save some $$$ and have more than 2 colors to choose from. Does anyone know of any good leather places in CA?

Gurekku:
I am ordering it from the factory through a dealer because they don't have the car with the options that I want. Unfortunatelly, it takes 60 days

i recommend trying www.leatherseats.com
you might be able to get an even better deal since they do a lot of business with people on the org. you have the choice of dozens of colors and you can get 2 toned (like in the picture of the max on the main page)and/or a design embroided on the leather for free. they also sell leather for the door panels and for your e-brake and shifter.

Yeah, I checked out that site, but they just sell the covers right? I was thinking of taking it to a place that would actually take off the cloth and reupholster the seats with leather. Have you seen the leather seat covers? Do they look very nice?

no no, when i say 'covers' its because i dont know what else i should call them. you do take the cloth off and reupholster the seats with the leather. you can do it yourself (they sell all the tools and supplies you need as well) or you can have someone do it professionally but obviously that will cost you some more money.

Oh, I get it. I was thinking they were just like those seat covers that you put over regular cloth seats.

Does Katskinz have a website?

I tried to go to that site, but the server was not found. I'll do some searching on the net, and see if I can't find that website. Thx.

Yo, where did you get that aluminum dash kit? And is the aluminum color of your leather shiny? Was it hard to find that color? I'm planning on doing a two tone scheme with black, and maybe trying to find a titanium color to match the gagues, but I doubt that they have titanium leather. So, I am thinking of trying some other similar colors.

Do you know Classic Softrim?

My 2002 6-speed Maxima arrived yesterday. It had Meridian Edition, but to everyone's surprise, that didn't include leather as expected. So my dealer is offering to have it done locally with a company called Classic Softtrim. I spoke to them and they don't use Katzkin, rather they make their own in a So. Cal., by company called Distinctive Industries.

Has anyone had any experience with either of these companies?

Thanks,

An excited, soon-to-be-owner of a Maxima.

No, I have not had, nor have I heard of any experiences with either of those places. I think that the dealer where I live goes through Classic Softrim also though.
