5spd swap, shifter hits up against heat shield. what to do?

Hey guys, I am just about done doing my 5 speed conversion, bolted in the support and control rods. But the shifter is rubbing up against the heat shield/exhaust, making it very difficult to shift into any gear. Should I just remove the heat shield? Or maybe dimple the heat shield to make some room for the shifter? Has anybody else ever had this problem? Sorry for the noob question but I searched and couldn't find anything. Any suggestions would help out a lot. Btw it is a short shifter also, idk if that could be the problem.
Thanks
Tim

as long as everything is installed correctly, there is no harm in taking off the heat shield or dimpling it a bit, when i installed my STS it scraped a bit on the heat shield, so i just bent it so that i wouldnt hit anymore

I had the same problem when I did a 5spd swap on my old Maxima. I just took a dremel and cut out only where it was contacting. That way I still had the shield in place. Worked like a charm.

Heat shield isn't needed IMO, and is just extra weight. Ditch it. Ptatohed has removed his along the whole tunnel for about 1.5 years now with no ill side effects. Next time I'm under there, mine will be removed too.

I removed my heat shield when I did a STS as well, as it was rubbing and making an annoying vibrating noise. I noticed no differences without it. I wouldnt worry about running without one.

yeah, i just removed my heat shield, but the STS is still rubbing against the exhaust, but nearly not as bad. and i dont even have the rubber things attached to the exhaust.

Ooo I love the sound of weight reduction. How much can be lost by removing it down the entire tunnel?

still? that dont sound right. retrace your steps on all of your connections again. somewhere near the sfiter may not be set right.

I forget, but it's in the 3-5 lbs range. Ptatohed and I keep all the weight we shed in an excel spreadsheet so we don't have to remember it. I can look it up and give you a definitive answer if you like.

True. But a pound there, a pound there starts to add up. Even with my SC and add-ons, I've managed to shed over 200 lbs.

ehhh, this has me confused, here are some pics, im pretty sure i have everything set right? correct me if not. i really think it has to do with the short shifter, because it is scraping at the bottom of the control rod. could it be that i have a stock exhaust? would upgrading to an apexi world sport fix this problem? i can still change gears fine but it scrapes when changing into some gears.

Oh NICE! Sorry to side track this thread, but could I take a look at that spreadsheet? I want to do some serious weight reducing. So far the only thing I've done is take subwoofers out of the trunk, take the spare tire and jack out, and fill my gas between 1/3rd tank and 1/8th. If I could shed even as much as 100lbs of stuff that is kinda useless (like the heat sheilding for example) that would be so amazing.

you are missing a major piece!!! the pice that holds the shifter in place and keeps it at the right height.

Hole Bracket - 34560-70N00 go to your nearest dealer and take this number to confirm this is what you need. cause according to your pics its missing. look at the last one. i should not beable to see the ball of your shifter.
