hey guys i just recently installed a cattman y pipe. and i noticed that the new gasket between the y pipe and the cat. is leaking. now as far as i understand it just needs to be torqued 38-48ft/lbs, i have it torqued to 46ft/lb. so my question is am i supposed to used some sort of liquid gasket stuff in conjunction? or do i just go get a new gasket? or if anybody has any ideas i'd like to hear them thank you.

 

Id say get a new gasket or try a little tighter. Ive never herd of anyone putting sealer on exhaust gaskets ever.

 

Your flanges probably dont line up perfectly. If its a new gasket, dont bother getting another one. Use the liquid gasket on both sides of the gasket(I always use this on my exhaust, just to make sure I wont get any leaks, either way it cant hurt it, oh use the sensor safe stuff). How do you know its leaking? Are you getting water drips at morning start ups? If it still leaks try moving it around a bit. Worst case, youll have to get your flange cut, angled, and welded. I had this issue also, liquid gasket has been doing the trick for about 2 years now.

 

i could here a raspy sound underneath the car. so then i had my brother hold a bundle of rags over the exhaust to create a little pressure. then i went with a balled up rag and started covering all the gasket'ed areas i had dealt with, and when i put over the ypipe->cat it was the spot.

 

your mating surface is probably dirty. try cleaning the cat flange before you do any cutting/welding.

OEM gaskets let alone cheap ones have a hard time sealing around uneven surfaces.

Oh and about the only liquid gasket that would work on that scenario is muffler cement. Ive seen my Exhaust gas temperatures hit 1100F. I know most of these liquid gaskets are good to 450-500. Ive seen people using muffler cement on gaskets before, but i wouldnt want to be the person removing the exhaust after.
