anyone ever wonder what that Clicking sound is in the axle?

like, whats makes it sound like the most annoying nasty roller coaster sound that is it when you turn? I know I need to get mine done, but when I see some ppl or hotties walking by, I just hate turning. lol

Is it a safety thing that the car MFG does? Or do the bearings really do that?

It's not a safety thing, it's just what happens. When you get grit in bearings and they start to wear, you get odd sounds. In this case, it could be the tripod bearings seizing and freeing up, or something else.

i believe the"clicking" sounds on sharp turns usually indicates a worn outer joint of your axles.. I need to replace mine soon.

Yep the noisey axle is a ticking time bomb. Good news is you can get a reconditioned axle for fairly inexpensive with a core charge which you get back when you turn over your old axle.

You mean we could do that where? Autozone and other parts stores?
Thanks.

i've heard many say Raxle is the best because of their quality. They maybe bit pricey but good quality = $$$.. http://www.raxles.com/

I'd go with raxles if you have the money for them. They only reason why I rebuilt my CV joints is because they were dryrotted and none of the grease had begun to leak out. If you see grease on the outer portion of the boot, then chances are that dirt got in. Once dirt gets in I wouldn't trust it to last, regardless of how well it is rebuilt.

The axles do not contain bearings that make noise. (There are bearings that hold the axle but they turn contantly no matter what direction the wheels are pointed). The axles contain constant velocity joints that have sliding motion between their parts. When they wear out they no longer slide smoothly from one section of metal to another and under load the metal makes a clicking sound. It's analogous to a sliding board going from smooth to becoming a staircase.

i think this is quite a common situation with 7-10 year old maximas. part of what you pay to have the pleasure of these cars.

If your car is lowered you can expect to wear out your axles much more often.

There is a sticky on "how to" .... but have you ever done one? You know how messssssssssssyyyyyyy it is???? lol really, it is a job and a half and four times the mess! Not worth it in my opinion.

Raxles for the WIN! Worth every penny in my account to get a good quality part and Raxles makes them good as they get. Lifetime warranty IIRC too. Fast shipping and a good overall company!

1.5 hrs .... flag time? Seems like a lot. I can do the pass side axle in 20 min, that is including jacking the car up.

To properly rebuild an axle yourself is much more of a pain and cost than getting a reman'd axle. It will also not be as good.

Like most people said up there :P im pretty sure its your driveaxles. If you dont know how to see them...Park you car, while its on turn all the way to the right or left and then look at the well that lets you see inside there should be like a rubber cover near the wheel thats the axle under it. If it is ripped and there is grease everywhere then it is in need of replacement. I bought mine today and plan to change them out tommorow i bought mine at Napa about $100 each a little less but it does have a lifetime warranty. Im not sure if other stores have same warranty. anyways once the axles boots are ripped dirt and other stuff can get in it. after a while it becomes hard to turn hence the clicking noise. -hope it helped-

to be fair it was the first time and on a 2000, on the passenger side the 3 bolts that bolt up the axle are right up against the hot exhaust.
