Limited slip in non-LSD tranny?
Is it possibly to install a LSD in a 5 speed tranny that doesn't have LSD? My tranny is coming apart anyway for a repair and figured I'd see if I can swap the parts.
The quaife is a torsen-type LSD. It's fairly durable and provides better performance than the viscous stock LSD. The stock LSD viscous coupling also supposedly wears out in 60k although I don't have any firsthand experience with that. (In other automotive applications it is common for viscous couplings to have a limited lifetime, e.g. Jeep Cherokees).
The advantage of the viscous is that it's probably a little smoother to drive. In fact, most FWD cars don't offer any LSD option just because the average Joe Car Buyer is a dope and prefers an open-wheel diff because it creates no feedback to the steering wheel.

The stock tranny was only $1800 brand new about a year ago from competitively priced online dealers. Price has gone up since last year.
I'm not sure I'd buy one. Every single OEM tranny I've ever torn down has used the same two sizes of adjustment shims on the differential. So the Nissan assemblers weren't adjusting anything - they just bolted things together. Lucky owners get good life out of the tranny because those sizes were close to the proper fit. Unlucky owners end up needing a rebuild. If I bought a brand new tranny I'd take it apart and check the shim sizes before installing it just to be sure.

^^ Good post!
but Dave .... why would anyone really want to "feel" the front tires on the road
I know exactly what you mean! Nothing like driving a car and not having any feeling / idea what the front end is doing (washing out, floating, lifting ... etc). I want a car that I can feel every thing the front end does. I don't really get that "responsivness" from my Maxima, but oh well .... it's what I want, not what I have (atm!)

I believe $1800ish was the price I got from Garrand's Nissan a few years back. This was unshipped of course.
Yes, Crooper, you can add an LSD to a 5-speed tranny. If you had an automatic, you would have to replace the whole transmission.
I swapped my stock Maxima non-VLSD trans for an I30 VLSD trans earlier this year.
I forget if this applies to stick shifts or not, but I had to replace my driver side axel with a VLSD axel.

The Nissan dealer also told me they would sell me a GTR at their cost too.

It is a dealer. I buy all my parts from everythingnissan.com and when they come it comes with an invoice printed by the dealer "Infiniti of Scottsdale" Scottsdale, AZ. The parts are all OEM too.

Trademotion.com is a hosting site that allows dealers to sell parts online.
Worldpartsexpress.com one such website (hosted by trademotion) of a Nissan dealer in Brooklyn Park, MN. I know because I've placed probably a dozen orders through them and they are excellent.

Dave
the http://www.trademotion.com site doesn't appear to be a Nissan dealer to me.

my link is not the same as yours. Or if you wish, try http://www.everythingnissan.com and then navigate your way to the parts catalog.and
to what Dave said.

5spd transmissions are $1900-$2000 from Courtesy Nissan. They used to be $1695 when I first looked at them online about a year or a year and a half ago.
