Grey99 went to HPT track tonight - new PB !

OK - the weather turned good, so off I went - got to the track around 6PM and checked in. I took the car with a 2/3 nitrous bottle (the most I had in one 15lb bottle) and 1/3 tank of VP Racing Motorsport 109.

I set the M&Hs to 14psi. I staged normally, then ran the first pass with just a 75-shot all the way. The tires hooked good, shifter worked really well, and it was just another trip down the strip ( 13.057 ET, 106.24 MPH - on the 75-shot). Daymn..

I took the next two passes by launching on the 75-shot and staying with it through first gear, then engaging the second 75-shot stage just after the 1-2 shift and stayed in that the rest of the way. Wow - a pair of 12.4 ETs and 113 MPH passes. The final pass was a little slower, 'cause I was running out of spray by third gear. It was a mere 12.746 ET at 108.37 MPH.

here's the first slip for the 75-shot pass: (14psi)

#2 14psi This is my personal best now...

#3 14 psi

#4 14 psi - I think.. nitrous was gone at the end.

A true CAI:
Here is a shot of my latest under-the hood air intake Gorilla tape and all:

And finally the nitrous window and Shift_Fast_3 controller:

Special thanks to the guys who persuaded me to lower tire pressures - daymn, that worked good.

Actually Jime and Nealoc187 made me pay attention - and they were right. I didn't have time to go lower with pressures, but there is some more to be gained there, I'm now sure.

I'm making incremental changes - and testing each one - and that alway takes time. I did not spray the second stage during first gear, for instance. That is good for a tenth or two.

What did you think of the 75-shot pass? That surprised me... with some attention, maybe a better 60', that could have been a 12-sec pass with a 75-shot.

I can mount the M&Hs on much lighter rims I already have. I could get larger M&Hs. I can raise the WHP to 400 and try again. I can finish my dual-heated-15lb-bottle project to keep pressure up in the last 1/8 mile. I can complete my ABS belly-pan project. I can go to bed now....

very impressive for sure dude! that was a 2.0xx 60 for the 75 shot. all you need is a 1.9x or that freakin awesome 1.8x 60 and there's 12's with 75 shot very very impressive

Good stuff Grey. I knew you should have been much quicker with the slicks but didn't know what pressure you were running.

I think if you drop a bit more you should be able to get a 1.7 60'.

It feels great when you drop that much in your et, will be waiting for your next visit to HPT.

Congrats on the new PB Grey! Yep the pressure is important, I was going to mention it yesterday but the other guys already had it covered. My slicks are never higher than 14 psi, I'm usually running somewhere from 12-14 depending on track conditions..

OK, I'm a believer now. I wish I had a chance to go lower, but the season isn't over yet around here...

Details, details, details..... ( got your monster 3.5 ready yet?).

Thanx - I don't know how many people even noticed - I was either hot-lapping or parked in the pits deciding what to do next. I did notice how far back the other lane's car was while I went through the traps.

Yeah I'm sure you'll get more passes in to experiment, and I imagine you can beat the 12.4 yet too..

Unfortunately my 3.5 is going slowly, had a bunch of delays waiting on parts and shipments getting screwed up for almost 3 months. And now I'm busy with the house trying to get some work done before the snow flies and some unexpected repairs on my truck came along and I'm strapped for cash for a few months, so I'll keep at it bit by bit but realistically it's looking doubtful I'll have it up and running this fall before the bad weather hits.

PLX log files for the four HPT passes on 9-04

Thanks to everyone that gave me an attaboy - it's great when a plan comes together.

I downloaded the PLX log files today and made JPG files from them. I'm posting them here in the order they happened.

Run # 1 :

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...2008/HPTaa.jpg

Run #2:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...2008/HPTbb.jpg

Run #3:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...2008/HPTcc.jpg

Run #4:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f2...2008/HPTdd.jpg

Runs #2 and #3 - the 12.4x / 113 MPH passes - show just how close I am getting to fuel cut in the traps. It's time to make some changes.

A question for the slicks guys:

I looked up the specs on M&H slacks again - the 24/8.5/15 ripples have a little more diameter compared to the 23s I'm using now. I see that the tire is also specified for a 8" wide rim. I have these two really light 13lb MT ET Drag wheels that are 10" wide. ? Would using these 10" rims mess up how the M&H slicks will hook up at lower pressures ?? their contact patch, that is....

Dual-bottle setup now under way...

I ordered another 15lb NX bottle and it arrived, and ordered all the plumbing and heater for the second bottle. I'm going to use two 6AN hoses from the bottles together to a 6AN Y connector, a couple of 6AN gauge adapters for the pressure gauge and the pressure switch, connect the second heater through a relay and switch to the common pressure switch, and call it good.. 6AN all the way to the engine compartment. That gives me four 15lb bottles for road trips.

When spraying, I can only get about 10 lbs of nitrous out, then no liquid shows. This is consistent behavior.... Spraying at 150-shot all the way uses a lot of nitrous - four passes per full 15lb bottle.

When I parallel two large heated bottles, I can make more than four passes (hopefully eight 150-shots) , and the pressure will be higher at the traps because I'll be drawing from 2 hot bottles, not one. This will also let me raise the bar to higher shots - at least 175-shot for 405 WHP.

I'll take photos after the install - certainly this week....

Well, you gotta plan ahead. Lowering tire pressure helped a bunch, but after reviewing my PLX logs of the four passes, at HPT, on the 12.4x runs I see I was about 100 RPMs from fuel cut in third gear, in the traps. I gotta do something about that -taller slicks, maybe.

My choices are M&H slicks with 73 inch circumference (present slicks), 77 inches, or 82 inches around. The 77 inch slicks would drop the RPMs about 5.5% in the traps, or about 325 RPM down to 6175 from 6500. The 82" slicks would drop RPMs 8.9% , from 6500 to 5921 in the traps, assuming the same ETs. I like the 24.5x8.5x15 M&Hs with the 77 inch circumference.

Anyone have better ideas?

Raise your rev limiter or go with the 24.5's. I think the 24.5's is the best option because spraying seems to works better at low rpm's and raising the limiter may net lower et's. Nitrous add the same HP to all RPM levels. The beauty of spray vs S/C or Turbo. I am going to try as many combinations that I can in one day. Fortunately I have 3 sets of tires ranging from 70" to 80" as well as a 7200 rev limit and I plan on taking 1 day to try them all. Fortunately at our track I can run 30 or 40 passes if I want so it makes it much easier.

I don't have any quick way to raise the rev limiter (stock ECU), and I hate making radical changes until I'm ready for them - OK, I'm **** about doing things one at a time, but....... Yup, I think there's not much advantage to doing that anyway - nitrous rules at the lower RPMs.

I like the 24.5 M&Hs idea for the extra headroom in the traps. Do you think I could mount them on 10" wide wheels and still keep the contact patch correct at 12psi ?? I'm gonna toss the Hoosier 23x12x15 track slicks anyway - not enough traction, so I already have those M/T ET Drag wheels here. They have 5" backspacing, so they don't stick out too far - they're on my avatar photo.

Of course, if I'm succesful in getting a little faster in the 1/4 mile, I might run out of headroom again. If I redlined at the traps with the 24.5" slicks, that would be around 119 MPH in the traps - probably possible with 405WHP... I'm saving locking the TC clutch in the middle of third gear for emergencies.

Dang -30 or 40 runs in one day..... they must really like you there! Five is all I've ever seen in one day - too many race cars, bikes, ATVs and Jr. dragsters on the same day.

Dual 15lb bottles are complete!

I just finished the installation tonight - tested for leaks, found one, fixed it. Dual bottles and dual heaters, common gauge and pressure switch. Seems good to me - and that 15 foot purge plume looks purdy at night. Heh.

Motorized bicycle - for your entertainment...

I had a fellow I know drop by a couple of nights ago, with his latest creation. This is an older mountain bike with a sweet 80cc engine and accessories installed. This is a new fad around town, and this guy does custom work for a lot of people - his latest contract is for the Sheriff's Department - a patrol bike!

Anyway:

He is planning on making me a cruiser version with my exact Nissan car colors and a couple of hamburgers for a logo.

And it's nice to have a spare - even an extra full 10 lb bottle is a good thing. I eBayed the last 15 lb NX bottle for $152 - shipped.

I ordered the 24.5 / 8.5 / 15 M&H slicks last night from Jegs. Next dry track date for me is the 17th at KCIR, and possibly the 19th as well. Then HPT has a track day on the 25th. It's raining a lot now..... time of the year, I guess.

Dual bottles, a touch larger slicks, and spraying heavy in first gear - oh boy!

Well, I gotta test these now. I have a few tricks when mounting them that will help, and I just want to keep from hitting fuel-cut before the traps, when I step up my game next time out. Frankly, I didn't have much spinning with the 23" M&H if the track is decently prepared.

I thought about the 26" M&H that is 10" wide, but one change at a time. When I raise the WHP again, I'll probably need these.
