im thinking about going all out with the exhaust system on my maxima. I would like headers, y-pipe, and megan racing exhaust.

How much would installation cost for these three items ( cause i most likely don't have all the tools i need to do it my self)

What brand do you guys preffer for y-pipe and headers?

and how much hp gains should i expect? ( dont really care for hp, just sound

 

well i guess i can install the cat back. But how much for the other two items installation?

 

Oh, and what can be done to get that rumbling sound when the rpms are dropping? if the Megan exhaust doesn't do that, then what exhaust system will?

 

Why not call a Nissan dealer and see what the book time is for installing both exhaust manifolds? That will give you an idea of the labor costs once you know what a muffler shop charges per hour.

You might have a hard time finding a shop that will install headers because that gets rid of the pre-cats. Some shops won't remove cats unless they are replacing them with new ones. They might have you sign something that says the vehicle will not be operated on the street. Just depends on the shop and how seriously they take the emissions laws and how strictly they are enforced. Just call around and ask a few shops what kind of experience they have installing headers, if they don't do them due to emissions concerns, they will tell you.

When I had dual exhaust put on my '77 Cutlass, they only reason that I didn't have any problems was that I already had a test pipe in place of the original cat. Even though 1981 and older vehicles were exempted from the catalytic coverter requirement during state inspections, shops still could not remove a still functioning coverter. Go figure.

 

Header install job you are probably looking at $400+, my brother recently got a quote of $500 to install set on his 02 Altima, he promptly posted the headers for sale afterwards.

 

there is a guy in chicago (i have no idea where you live) that can do them for 300. and in only a few hours. Point is just ask around .. maybe you can find somebody that can help you out...

I dont know what tools you already have but you could spend some money, get the tools you need and do the install yourself. That's what i did.

 

i was quoted 400-600 by shops willing to do it. Then there were a few that didnt wanna touch it because they had to install the 02 sims.

 

I paid a little over $300 for header/y-pipe install on my '99 Solara...not a max, but both engine bays are comparatively cramped.

 

400-600 is market price, AFAIK. I paid Tilley 250 to do headers + motor mounts, but I worked on it with him, so I'd guess if I didn't help, it would have been in that range.

 

you don't HAVE to install 02 sims with the headers right? i was gonna just deal with the check engine light and get the 02 sims later

FREE...if you do it yourself. HomeMade Performance! The shop I work at just turned one down, on a Maxima. I wanted to do it so bad. We are not allowed to remove a properly functioning cat. I believe that's federal. All I know is that it is a 15k dollar fine for me. 10k to the manager. And 25k to the shop. So if you get told no alot when you ask shops about doing this...thats probably their reason so.

 

On doing it yourself, I did my headers with my friend and had a S*** load of fun. Their were times when it was a PITA but it was all worth it . Here's some good links for reference for doing your Axel Back .
