Need help with TIRES
Need help with TIRES
I have a 97 SE with Yokohama AVID V tires. I am considering replacing them with Toyo FZ4s. Has anybody used this tire before? If so, what is your feedback.
I would like to stay with a V rated tire b/c of sidewall stiffness. Are there any other recommendations of tires that you have liked that are V rated with M+S traction? This is a daily driver car with only slight modifications, so I need a balance of traction, tread life, and all season drivability.
thanks,

I prefer Michelin Pilot H4/V4 tires. Good overall compromise.

How are they in the wet? I know Michelin's used to be horrible in the wet, but lasted forever.

Unfortunately, I don't have direct experience with these except to say the new Pilot series have a better wet reputation than previous-gen Michelin tires. That stated, I doubt you'll find a better wet-traction tire than the Avids that you have now. The BF Goodrich Comp T/A HR4 II tires have a good wet traction reputation as well, but the Yoko Avids are pretty much at the top for wet traction considerations.
You're trying to replace an already excellent tire, especially for the money. It will be difficult to do without some sort of compromise on your part, which will probably involve wet traction/handling......

Thanks again for the reply.
I did get about 42,000 miles out of the AVIDs and liked them overall. A lot of the local tire stores say that they have a better tire than the AVIDs (even the ones that can sell them), and two of them recommended the Toyo FZ4s. I am not familiar with them so thought I would investigate some more.
The AVIDs are the cheapest V rated tires that I have found and I was pretty happy overall. I just don't want to spend more and get less, so perhaps I should go back to the AVIDs.

Thoughts? Has anyone downgraded from an H rated to V rated tire and noticed any difference?
thanks.
I just put on RE950s last week. So far, better handling then stock Toyos, but not enough experience with them yet... One thing that I might have noticed though, is that they so far seem to be noisier, a different sound that is louder for now...
I got them for $110/each including mounting.
Anyone know how long they should last, if I rotate them every 10K??

Did you have H or V rated Toyos from the factory?

I didn't want to pay too much, V rated I think are a bit more $
Also, does V or H make a difference in being a true All Season tire, I figured V rated being more of a sport tire, would not be as good for All Season...

I doubt you'll notice anything. Just as long as you get the manufacturer-recommended size, not a 2 inch bulge on each side of the wheel

Bridgestone RE950s
After dilly-dallying about whether or not I'd go with a summer/winter setup, I put on RE950s after 2 years with Dunlop SP Sport 5000 (W Rated).
My big problem with the SP5Ks were snow performance. They're the best rated performance all-seasons in snow, but I got stuck. I decided that I didn't want to do that again.
The RE950s are brand-new, but they are pretty amazing. The short version is that I don't miss the SP Sport 5000s. The RE950s cost a tiny bit more, but I should get another 50% treadlife.
I can't really get them to chirp off the line, and they hold really well around turns. No real rain to speak of yet, but so far so good on wet ground. Snow's right around the corner, so we'll see. I was debating going with the Dunlop Sport A2s based on Tire Rack ratings, but calling them up, 2 different reps steered me clear, and to the Bridgestones. They suggest that the A2s are more of a Touring tire, and the Bridgestone Revo Turanza Zs are pretty awesome there (but expensive, otherwise I would have tried them)
So let's see, Bridgestone has S03s, RE730s, RE950s, Turanza Revo Zs, Blizzak LM-22...
All at the top or near the top of their respective performance tire categories. Pretty tough lineup to beat.
On another note, with my Wife's SVT, we went from stock G-Force KDW to BFG Comp T/A VR4. I could notice the difference in dry, not really in wet, but the snow difference was amazing. At that time they were on special in the required size and it was a no-brainer. Best bargain tire purchase I've made.
All that is to say that I wouldn't be afraid to step down to a lower speed rating especially if it's surveyed to be a top-notch handler
