Black steel wheel winter tire package question
Black steel wheel winter tire package question
Hi, is anyone running the standard black steel wheels and winter tires on their 2009 Maxima?
I didn't see Tire Rack offering a steel wheel option, so my question is will in a 17" steel wheel fit?
Thanks
Joe

Not meaning to put words in Joey's mouth, but I would guess he faces the situation that winter tires are taller and narrower than OEM tires, and to fit them inside the fenders, he has to step down to a 17" tire. It is VERY important that there be GOOD clearance between winter tires and fenders, ESPECIALLY if there is even a slight chance chains might be used. He may be going with steel because it is always stronger and cheaper than alloy. And he may be going with black because it looks good on his car.
Oh, well; looks like I stuffed Joey's mouth full of words anyway . . .

I went with an alloy wheel from tire rack and hankook iPike snows. I was a bit hesitant to try this tire on account of its T speed rating but I have been quite pleased I carved my way home in 6 + inches of the white stuff. In dry condtions it is very stable, not loud or wobbly and good in standing water. It looks very aggressive and has the same tread pattern as Hakkapellitta RSI and costs considerably less. Anybody looking for a good snow should give it a rip.
Good luck trying to find a 17 inch steel wheel I checked several tire shops both brick and mortar and online and could not find a 17 inch steelie.

Have not the slightest hesitation. 'T' rated tires are designed for prolonged driving at 118 MPH, and I would not expect them to fail in shorter runs around 125 MPH. Few folks will be going much faster than that with their winter tire setup.
It started snowing in Friday here in Central MA and has not stopped, and we have been "wrecking the malls" taking the Max and leaving the MDX in the garage.
Very happy with how the Max does in the snow.

Hate to revive an old thread, but I am looking to purchase a set of winter wheels and tires for my 2009. I too would go with 17 inch steelies if they were available. Which alloys did you end up getting? Do the centering rings work properly? Did you get the 18 or 17 inch wheels?. I am looking at the 17 inch wheel options at Tire Rack. Thanks for any advice.
