projector foglight for retro

I have a set of 2006 maxima projector fog lights. Can I retrofit them in my oem 98 housing and go HID. would it be too small? should I sell them and get tsx or e46 projector like everyone else? what do you think?

Um you can retro it but its a foglight not a headlight. I wouldnt say get tsx or e46's either. Do a little reading here www.hidplanet.com/forums and then you will find all your answers.

Not many projectors fit in the fog housing and it is a pain to get the lens off. IMO it is not worth a retro. I have tried and just ended up putting a 3k kit in there.

+1

I tried getting the housing apart...no dice. The sealant or whatever is not the same as the headlights or tails, I think you'd have to cut it off.

Definitely not worth the time/effort to retro the fogs, especially since most people don't use them all that often for normal driving.

One day i'll have my clear lensed fogs with blazers done... and you'll be sooooo jealous Coolsaber57...

If you want more light from your headlights, get another projector. I can't imagine that those are very intense compared to another oem projector.

Those maxima fog projectors compared to our stock housing output is anothe story though.

i was thinking of doing that retro but once i got the fogs apart, i noticed that i would have to do ALOT of grinding on the projectors just for them to fit. So i just put in a yellow glass capsule with a 100w bulb and called it a day. Oh and by the way when i had the fogs apart i took out the anti-glare nipple and the silver tab on top of the housing to give the extra blinding glare and more light output. i have my fogs pointed high anyway so it really doesn't affect any drivers. Just bright as H377......

Wait, you took the glare shield out AND aimed them high?

How is that NOT going to blind people?

I think everyone has this misconstrued here (except kzoosho ). I think he meant he wants to put these projectors in his headlights for good output with an HID kit. My recommendation, like kzoosho's, is to not do that. Sell these and buy something more appropriate. These are too small, IMO, for a headlight projector.

In my opinion I wouldn't bother with the dual projector setup. It's hard to do, not overly pleasing to the eye, and a proper bixenon projector will outperform them.

Thats not a dual projector setup though. It is a halogen foglight.

I wouldn't recommend dual projectors in the OEM housing... I tried fitting a pair of 2.5" projectors, and it was not looking good. They could have fit with more cutting, but they would have been so close to each other that it looked terrible. AFAIK Flava is the only one to do dual projectors, and he used a mini 1" or 1.5" projector.

It seems like you need major headlight reconstruction to make that happen... notice the A6 (who uses a 1990 A6 projector? that probably looks like **** compared to a native HID projector) duals posted above were in a self-contained module. He probably sawed off most of the stock housing, then just epoxied that to the back.

Yeah, it looks like he did (at least for the black trim piece that goes in between the lense and the actual housing)

Still don't get the whole HID foglight thing... just pop in some yellow halogen bulbs, or lexus capsules are even better, and call it a day. IMO you'd be better off with FX35s and halogen pencil-beam driving lights.

What all else do you have or plan on running?
Start figuring out the draw, and make a determination from that.

Don't waste your time on the FX's and TSX. 4 lows and 2 highs is backwards. 4 lows and 4 highs seems much more balanced. You will be sorry if you have great lows and crappy highs. Just get 2 sets of the FX Replica projectors. (I wish i had!!!) They're a hair smaller than the original FX's. They are more intense than the FX's b/c they are designed better. The retrofit source carries them and i think they can be found from other vendors online through google.

I have FX's w/clear lenses, DL50's and 50 watt apexcone ballasts and i'm still not satisfied w/my FX low beams. On the other hand, 4 high beams (FX highs plus r34 highs) is just enough light to drive fast at night.

These came off of Hidplanet.com from JVX. Hopefully you see what i'm saying.
