Muffler / exhaust clunking
Muffler / exhaust clunking
From inside, while turning and on bumps i would get this clunking sound from behind my car. At first I thought it was the struts but then i realized its probably my (stock) exhaust/muffler banging against the undercarriage.
I looked at it today and everything seemed in order, until i shook the muffler tip. The sound is coming from INSIDE the muffler.
Any idea what it is? I wouldnt know what the inside looks like but it seems to be on spring type mechanism because it bangs back and forth as if it had tension.

One of your rubber hangers much be ripped apart. I would put it on a lift and check it again.
Try shaking your exhaust and see if it moves easily. If it does go to a parts store and buy that rubber exhaust piece for about $2 or so.

I would shake it, and stop/hold it still right away and the inside would still be "clunking".
Well, if you're sure that the sound is from something trapped in the muffler, you've only really got two options...
Try to knock whatever it is out of the muffler, or just replace the rear section.

When I first got my maxima one of the exhaust hangers broke and the exhaust was resting on a bracket. When ever I would go over a bump it would rattle. I say jack it up and see if you can find the problem that way. also is your exhaust aftermarket or stock?
You guys were right....again. One of the flanges was rusted completely off.
Questions:
-Anyone know if thats a stock B pipe?
-If you notice where it broke off, the pipe connecting to the b-pipe seems to be flattened out. Is this normal? Seems very restricting.

I had the same thing happen to my max and I made a bridge over the bracket and the rattle went away. I would like to take a picture for you, but I am unable to post.
I took two pipe clamps and a piece of flat stock, drilled two holes in two pieces of flat stock and used the pipe clamps as the support.
The flat stock rides on the support bracket and the pipe clamps are on both sides of the bracket. It took about 20 minutes to fix.
One downside....at about 2500 rpm the exhaust is a bit loud in the car, but the clunking is gone. Suits the need at the time.
If you got any questions, please PM me. I can explain a little more if you would like.
I would take off the hanger from the rubber and just leave the rubber hanger there; it isn't going to do anyhting anyway since the metal piece broke.
