My Summer Project Just Fell Into My Lap

Hello all. I was searching on craigs list in my area for a maxima. Not only did i find one, i found two. Both cars for $850. What a deal. One is in good condition just needs a little tune up and power steering repair, and the other was involved in a crash and the front end is a little messed up. This one will be the main project as i will need to rebuilt the front end. This will be fun. i have just about completed work on my Maxima that i have right now and get to start allover again with these. If anyone whats to comments or suggest on what enhancements i should perform on these cars, throw them my way. Here is the link to the craigs list item for you all to see.

If anyone has ideas as to the power steering problem as to what it could possibly be, please throw them my way.

it can only be 1 of three things, the powersteering lines are leaking, the pump is bad, or the rack is bad.

awsome deal!! i wish i had that luck. from the sound of the steering issue. its leaking fluid and has air in it or the pump is going. best to pore in new fluid bleed it threw.

as for things to look for are exhaust leaks (good excuse for a wsp) and ohm out the jectors and check for oil leaks. and other seals. fuel rail leaks.

Good luck!

what they said... pour in a bit of ATF into the steering system and see what happens (make sure the thing has a belt on it too!).

Once you have fluid in it, fire the car up and see where it goes.

the most common thing with these cars is the high rpessure hose springs a leak and you lose all your fluid.

Might as well buy the 4 gen poly bushing kit and redo the LCAs. You know the P-side bushings are shot from the PS fluid

addendum: assuming atf has been used its entire life; power steering fluid, ironically, is not the proper fluid to use, and many people don't know and use off the shelf PS fluid. eats gaskets, seals, etc., killing the system

well that sucks that few of the people around here doesn't know that recommended PS fluid for our cars is ATF....wen i got my car i flushed my steering system and filled it up with ATF...and no probs since 3 years aka no leaking....

they recommended DEXRON 2 but that was 15 years ago, 3rd gens seems to love DEXRON 3 in their steering system...

I'm pretty sure backwards compatible - but i've never seen the 2 anywhere. Isn't it made by GM or something? Maybe they still have the Dexron labled stuff?

my PS has been leaking since i got it. very slow leak. i started on PS fluid cause at the time i had no idea how attached to the car i would become. i wish i had known then cause i would have treated my car better. runs good. just has dents and dings, from off road mostly, nothing extreme just off paved road.

and add me to the list of fools that put PS fluid in their system once. I put a bottle of stopleak in there... didn't do crap. Later on i fixed the leak with just some new crush washers ( $4 fix) on the strut-tower-mounted hi-pressure hose junction... but now my PS pump is THE loudest thing on my car at idle.

o i know my pump is bad.. actually when i was at Greeny's house, he made sure my PS system was bled properly and it made no change whatsoever. I drove Khantalha's 4th gen and the steering was SOOO light and the exhaust was the loudest thing... at idle. Basically, my pump is trashed, has been for a while now. I have a spare that i'm gonna swap on.. it's a crapshoot but it might be in better condition, who knows.

The VE has a low-volume pump.. but your GXE should have a much lighter feel than your GXE. The VG SEs have the same pump as the GXE tho, which is the pump i'm putting on my car.. came from my parts car.
