Was checking around on the courtesyparts.com site, and it looks like they sell the VTC sprocket for the VE, a bit pricey tho ~ $430 each. Im guessing they are brand new. Wondering how well built these ones are.

Are the rebuild kits still available for these? And how hard of a job is it to do it yourself?

when I priced them out last (maroon max in 06) they were $32 ea (2x) and my local dealer had them in stock. Of course the in stock part was a fluke, and the chances of them still being there are fairly low.
how were they after u rebuilt them Matt? im thinking about doing mine right away since im doing the knock sensor as well and i hear it can help restore some pwr, mine just clack a bit at startup but im a bit **** about things working right, is it worth a rebuild?
I did it during a complete overhaul w/ high compression pistons and etc, so I couldn't tell you exactly what benefits were gained from the rebuild. However, there was no more clacking (when it sounded like a diesel before), so the rebuild did its job.
I rebuilt both of mine but at different times, one has 13K miles and the other has 11K.
Completely fixed the VTC issue, but the rear one is a bit difficult becuase there is very little room to work, if you can raise the engine a bit it would help a lot.

any special tools needed? I don't have air tools. Id like to rebuild my sometime in the near future if I can do it myself. Id be willing to pay a mechanic if it wasnt too expensive which i doubt.
not sure how you get it apart but dont you put the new spring in, and line the sprocket back up how it was when you took it off, and then use a press?
how does this spring cause such a ruckus?!

u bolt
large 1/2" socket to get the VTC nut off (cant recall the exact size, short socket needed to fit on the rear one)
long 6-point 10mm wrench to get the side cover bolts off, because there is very little room, Craftsman has a good one
There is a good write up on it with pics, if you search.
