IIRC, the Australian or NZ versions of the 3rd gens have folding rear seats. I remember seeing a picture some years ago. Maybe someone on this forum that is from there can take some pictures for you to see how it operates.

I brainstormed on it a few years ago- never did anything about it.

My thoughts...
Idea 1:
Bottom:
Cut the three hold-down posts off the top of the seatback.
At the bottom, cut the two protruding metal loops off and attach some home depot hinges to them.

Top:
At the top, use a flip-latch type of catch (like you see on toolbox tops and whatnot) on either side to hold the top of the seat back. Spray paint or powdercoat them as close as possible to your interior
It may not be the prettiest, but it would work.

Idea 2:
Go to a junkyard and get a scrapped S14 240SX rear seat (I don't know how S13 seats work). look at how the S14 is done and then cut the guts out of the seat and the car's chassis. modify the Maxima seat to use the S14 latches and whatnot, and install in the car.

Idea 3:
Do same as above with a 4 or 5 gen. At least the 5 gen has fold down seats.

I looked into doing something like that to mine. Seemed like more trouble than its worth.

I had to carry skiis before my car got whomped. I took out the carboard behind the armrest and made a pass-through for the fold down arm rest. Only issues with leaving it out permanently were noise from the truck and the fact that if I folded up the armrest it would leave a mark in the leather that might turn into a tear. You could probably modify a door like in the 2004 passats. So you have an armrest and a door to make a sound and permanent pass-through. I just took the seats out when I needed to move something big. They are just four screws and a couple clips, hardly more work than the USELESS fold down seats in my 5th gen (the hole is really small)

Maybe the guy who performed that mod can,
Our Maxima's dont have folding rear seats.
I didn't think the frame of the car can even allow it.
