120mph, and the radar detector starts bleeping.......
ok, long story:
There is a nice little 1 mile stretch on this 2 lane road near where i live. (This is 967 out in the Dripping Springs/Buda area of Texas, southwest of Austin, for those of you who know). This road rarely has any cars on it, and is smooth. By now, you should have figured out that this would be a good place to really open up and see what your car can do, without worrying about traffic and cops, right? Ok, well I get out there, pop it in 4th, and open it wide. A couple of cars come around the corner coming in the other direction, by this time i was going 100, so I decided to keep accelarating, as I would not be able to slow down much before I got to them. I was watching, and neither appeared to be a cop car. One of them was an expedition, though. Just as I zoomed past them in the other direction, I hit 120. That was enough for the day, so I let off. Just as I did that, my radar detector lights up like a christmas tree, Ka band. I was like, "oooookkk.....that is not good at all." I looked all around me, and did not see any speed traps on the side of the road. I figured that the guy in the expedition was an undercover. The radar detector didn't go off untill a second or two after I passed him, which is what was weird. He didn't turn around or anything, I was watching him. I was also looking for any roads that I could turn on, but there were not, since this is out in the middle of nowhere. I just kept going at about 60, parinoid that a cops was going to be coming around the corner.
There are two possible reasons that he did not pull me over that I can think of:
a. He could not have caught up with me, I was going so fast.
b. His radar did not even get me, it was obviously the rear window radar, but do those thigs work on traffic moving the other direction, or just approaching vehicles? And if it did work in the other direction, it might not have been able to read out my speed since I was going so fast.
whats the deal here guys? I know I was goin just a little too fast, but I want to know what happened.
also I guess he could have radioed me in to another cop somewhere, but that cops was not able to find me possibly? It was dusk, so he might not have been able to tell what type of car it was.

Just be happy there was no officer, and you weren't arrested
oh, by all means, I am. I won't be doing any high speeds on public highways for a while. Its dangerous to other people, myself, my car, and I risk getting arrested and a whomper speeding ticket.
of course, I was the only person in the car.

oh, and I have had several experiences similar to this, where I pass a couple of cars, then I get a full Ka band signal, and the only civilization around was the car(s) that just went by me, i was not speeding the two other times this has happened, though. The signal slowly fades away after it first comes on.
I have a Bel 936 detector

oh, and just another side note, I rarely speed excessivly(more than 5-10 over), and I do that even less now that i have the detector, and will not do anything extremely excessive anymore, due to the above experience
Wow, I cant believe none of you know this. I would bet $500 that the Exbidition also had a radar detector. Guess what, they pick up each other! Whenever me and my friend have our cars on at the same and are next to each other, both of our detectors go off.

Yes, I can't believe nobody else offered up the fact that it was another radar detector causing interference, not an undercover cop.
Chances are that you will never know what happened, or if it was a cop or not. But let me tell you this story:
I knew an officer that used to stick around the highway entrance ramp, radaring cars as they went by on the highway down below. Unless they were excessively speeding, like 20 over or more, he would not pull them over UNLESS THEIR BRAKE LIGHTS WENT ON WHEN HE RADARED THEM.
In other words, he would only pull over those cars that threw on their brakes when their detectors went off.

makes no sense ... at highway speed and from a vantage point like that, radar is totally ineffective, and there is very little chance of an officer to tell the difference in speed unless there are other cars around them. You are trying to measure a vector on a flat plane not at a diagonal plane like you describe.

If you wanna test me on radars on how they work, and how to beat cops in a speeding trial...try me...
-So, you're still sure about your "cop" friend ?

And, no, I don't want to test you on how to beat cops in a speeding trial... No doubt you have much more experience.

Blueghost75,
There are several explanation with your radar
detector detecting a KA band. First your device
detected an air plane radar, it detected another
radar detector, truckers radio, or a ka band
signal generator. Lucky for you there were no
cop nearby.

i guess.....
it was not a 1 or 2 bar Ka band, it was full on, like a radar was being point right at me.....i would think that passing another radar detector, or some other interference would not cause such a strong alarm
but whatever, i was just curious, i'm not worried about it now, I just wont drive that fast...

Should have had a V1, then you would have known where the cop was

C'mon now, we all speed now and again, let's lay off the guy for running his max up. We all know the penalties if we get busted speeding, and most of us are wise enough that if we are going to run in excess of 100mph we make sure our car can handle it, that we are the only people in the car and that there isn't any other cars on the freeway. You can get killed just as easily going 60 mph and have someone else hit you, so we take risks, people take risks everyday. I have taken my car up to 150mph and I decided that wasn't a risk worth taking again until I got some suspension etc.
thank you.
oh, and one more reason i probably wont be running at such high speeds for a while is because i felt like i was swimming when i was going that fast(suspention needs mods first)
thank you.
