speedometer not working properly

My speedometer doesn't work properly since monday.

Here is what it does,
- it will randomly fall to 0
- sometimes go from 0-current speed a couple times for about 5-10seconds and fall back to 0, or stay at the right speed
- If I knock on the dash it sometimes comes back for whatever amount of time, could be the whole trip or 30seconds
- after knocking the dash the last time my ABS light came on and stayed on. Until I parked and shut the car off, and started it again. it's now gone.

What could it be? speed sensor or faulty wiring/connection? possibly the cluster?

It could be the cluster, although I'm not 100% sure...

Although if pulled over you could say "Officer, my speedometer is broken; I didn't know how fast I was going"

lol, wouldn't work. I would still be in fault for not having a working speedometer.

lol tru but you can just tell em started happening every time you would get stopped they dont know................but seriously it could be your sending unit or wire from your sending unit to the speed o meter itself

I forgot to mention, I tried my cruise and it still works while my speed was at "0" . I'm pretty sure this rules out the speed sensor?

I had similar problem and replaced just the speedometer part out of the cluster so my millage would "match" and it fixed the problem.

Yeah.. try another cluster from a junkyard first. They have a tendency to go bad after 20 years.

Yea I agree with the two of them tings dont last in cars for ever and since the cruise works yea might just be the part in the cluster

i have gone through 2 speedos and 2 temp gauges and am on my 3rd of each. hopefully my last. but yea, they like to fail. only other possibility is the speed sensor but if cruise control works when the speedo is reading 0, the the speed sensor is fine.

alright, I might look into getting white face gauges or just a used black speedo. how much would either of them go for?
Do you rekon that it could be repairable?

I got a new cluster at my local pull-a-part for about $20... just depends on where you get it.

I was in court one time when one of the people claimed that. The officer also wrote them a ticket for operation of an unsafe vehicle. (that ticket was thrown out because the cop didn't verify it)

well, repapring them is one of those things where, if you have to ask if it can be done, then you probably don't have the electrical skills to do it.

at my local JY i can get a whole cluster for $20USD at a you-pull-it and like $70USD at a they-pull-it

we only have "they-pull-it" around here.. which is sad really.
One place they have three 3rd gens, I might be able to go out on the yard and get it on my own since my parents know the people who own the place. I'll see what I can do.

Does anyone know if its possible to put a regular panel in a car that has a digital cluster, or a way to fix a digital cluster.

Theres not much electrical skill involved in swapping the gauges - it is easier to swap the entire cluster, although in some cases (like mine), its better to swap the faces onto your original cluster, so it complies with your lights (O/D is sometimes in place of Security light, **** like that). Its not hard to swap the faces, just have to be careful and DONT play with the gas needle limits - I fiddled with my tacho, and it would read 1500rpm on the gauge when it was turned on (not running / 0 rpm), it took me aages to recalibrate it.

Theres a place for your questions. More details on what is wrong with your digital gauges? Regular panel will go in easily I'd imagine, search the forums, there is a write-up on the swap (there's also a YouTube video around somewhere) that shows how the systems are different in terms of connections & wiring.

there is wiring and modifications that would be needed to swap an analog cluster in.
fixing the cluster would be the best option if you have skills/equipment to do it.

sounds like the impact was just enough to break a just-about-to-fail solder joint. now the joint is making intermittent contact. junkyard time!
