Changing out my shocks

Hi Guys,

This is my first post on the max.org, i know there are lots of posts about shocks but I didnt find the information i needed.

So my shocks on my 2002 max are done and need to be changed. All i want is to keep a smooth quiet ride on my car.

I'm wondering what are the best shocks to get what I'm looking for?

I will be keeping the OEM springs. Any advice will be appreciated.

Monroe, Tociko Blues, KYB, etc

What information could you not find through search?

What replacement struts will give you an OEM like ride?

Well, OEM, for one.

Funny, search found me some related threads
http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...lace-them.html
http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...ocks-only.html
http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...k-springs.html
http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...k-springs.html

And there are a lot more threads than just that.

You need to search more, you'll find your answers.

Pmohr just owned you.. lol

And if you're keeping stock springs, and you want a stock feel, than the only thing to do is keep it stock. because stock springs and aftermarket shocks = stupid.

... not really stupid at all. Lots of people do the GR-2 and/or Tokico blues on stock springs. Still gives the car a good feel and a smooth ride. Just my .02 but I definitely wouldn't call it stupid.

Back to the OP. If you want a 100% BONE stock feel, the only way to go is 100% BONE stock. I personally don't think you will be disappointed with the feel of KYB GR-2s or Tokico HPs (blues). They will keep a good feel in terms of ride but will still handle a little better in turns.

A good way to search...

Search -> advanced search -> search titles only.....

...otherwise, every time you post people will be manning up on you like Pmohr just did.

the search function is really on the org. You search for one thing and something completely different pops up
Use googles' site search function. Its a lot more accurate..
http://www.google.com/sitesearch/

or type the thing you want to search in the google search bar followed by site:www.domainname.com
For example, if you want to search for Tokicos on maxima.org, type in: tokico hp site:http://forums.maxima.org

No, the org search is quite decent, if you use it correctly, which most people don't.

Check your settings, I bet you've got it set incorrectly, to 'Last Posted'.

denny_1986 you just don't know how to use the search function properly. It seems to work very well for me. Do you change the search function options?

SO i decided to go with tockico blues. I call up the performance parts place here in montreal... the guy tells me " i sell everything else but not Tockico ". great thanks!!

I don't want to go with OEM, the price is ridiculous down here. I'm just going to get some KYB's

you can get blues on ebay for 330 shipped. That's the cheapest price on the net for blues as far as i know.
I've read somewhere that kybs get a bit stiff when its cold out so you might wanna look into that before you make a purchase

I got mine off ebay for $275 shipped. At the time, there was a seller who was offering for $299 with free shipping. It was a buy it now or best offer, so I offered $275 and he accepted it. I think the seller was jdm_in_stock or something like that.

Ok so I ordered,

- 4 Tokico Blues off ebay 330USD + 40 Shipping
- 2 OEM front strut mounts with bearing 75 Canadian from www.autopartsway.ca

I'm still looking for OEM rear mounts, I found some KYB but after doing some reading using the "SEARCH FUNCTION" I read they are not the greatest.

good thing you're getting the front strut mounts. I was too cheap and now I regret it (just like everyone on here said).

are your strut dust boots in good shape? if not, now might be the time to replace them. if you do decide to replace them, do NOT go with the KYB ones for the rear. they are cheap and extremely low quality (tore after 3 months of being on).

So the ownly place i could find the rear shocks mounts are the dealer, and they are going for 88$ a piece.

Would going with KYB mounts in the rear be a disaster for me?

Have you checked rockauto.com?
They have listed the rear mounts part# K90299 for U$39.90 ( not sure if both but still a lot better than the dealer price, (around Can $50)

KYB

Get the kyb gr-2 it should have a similar ride quality, a bit tighter than stock but that should give way as you drive the car more often!

So here is the break down of all the parts going in on sunday.

2 front OEM mounts $150
2 front OEM mount bearings $60
2 rear KYB Mounts$100
4 tokico blue shocks $400.
2 OEM Tie rods inner and outer on both sides $150
2 OEM lower control arms with bushings $400.

Total:$1260

Thats a full suspension change in my books, you dont have to go that far but i'm just sick in the head. Anyways,I can't wait to get it all done this weekend.

You forgot the sway bar bushings, sway bar end links, and steering rack bushings. Another ~$40 or so, and you'll have everything all good to go.

Why the OEM LCAs? Could've gotten SNOMAX LCAs for cheaper, with ES bushings as well. Actually probably would be close to the same price, after shipping.

Word of advice to any rookies like me who are changing their shocks. When doing the rear shocks "DO NOT" use a vice grip or any tool for that matter to tighten the top bolt. I did this and now i have one blown rear shock 3 days after install. Who knows if its going to be covered under the warranty now.

Oh well... live and learn!
