I hit a deer

yep i recently was driving along the country roads of fairfeild county connecticut and out of nowhere a deer runs str8 in front of my car and bam smacks his head on the front of my car

the damage is pretty bad auto body shop quoted me $1100

....but really its just the side fender got bashed a bit...... its mostly just a dent theres no real paint damage and the reflector got smashed as well as damging the body around the light so i cant just pop in a new one....

the bumper got a lil damged too but i bought it all dinged and scatched up anyway so one more isn't even noticeable (except for the deer hair sticking out of the paint)

i am in no way planning on dropping $1100 to get this fixed and i have never done any real form of body work whatsoever...

luckily the headlight is fine and all the lights in the reflector work fine i disconnected it and put the whole assembly in the trunk so i still have all the parts its really just the housing that needs replacement

ill try to post some pics soon.......

It sounds like stuff that can be bolted on if you find the right color pieces. Fender, light, bumper. Hood, too?

Some frequent junkyard trips might save you some money.

Oh deer! Sorry couldn't resist.

Seriously, glad you're ok. I've been in your very predicament before with flying deer over the hood of my car. It's a crappy feeling. Snap some pics.

Be a deer and pass the gravy. Damn, I did it again! Sorry.

Just last month i had an encounter with 2 deer, i was coming down a back road near my house at night and i came around a bend going about 50 and i saw 2 deer next tot he road. They both jumped out into the road and i swerved left and dodged the first deer but the second one ran into the side of m car and hit nose or antler or something dented the rear window trim and put scratches from my front door to my quarter panel......f-ing deer need to get insurance

i was thinking the same thing

i drove past a few deer atop Mount Mitchell a few weeks ago, but they scampered off the road before i got too close. And a deer actually chased my brother's car and hit HIM, instead of the other way around. But luckily i haven't hit one yet.

Does anyone know if those little things you mount on your bumper to scare deer off actually work?

That's hilarious - actually, 2 yrs ago I drove from Toronto to Lake Placid on some backroads trip through Adirondack Park....and I counted in total, 3 deer came inches from smacking the GXE....but 8 deer in total were counted on this one trip lurking on the shoulder, waiting to kill my limousine.

I heard you can stick some whistle or something near the radiator and it supposedly deters them a bit.

lol those are a complete waste of money.......why would you buy a whistle that you cannot here but deer can????? Maybe you can ask a deer if they actually work....I would think to hear the whistle they woudl have to be really close... by that time you already hit them...

I can hear the dear now "thank god for that whistle... I nearly lost an antler there!!!"

Jokes aside. There are all kinds of sonic emitters out there that deter all kinds of pests and vermin that have been proven to work, so I'll reserve my cynicism.

Ive heard lots of stories of those deer whistles not working on the ranger forum im also on. Some say it attracts them

No substitute for not paying attention, sure there are cases where they are unavoidable, but im sure there are just as many where if the driver was paying attention, they wouldnt of hit a deer.

my old GXE has 6 kills to its name and thats just deer, and one ground hog, i really felt bad for that ground hog but the deer had it coming.

i live in jersey so as more people move in, more deer get pushed in the roads. little antlered rats. they are worse then squirrels

well, when you hit a deer in the knees at 65, the hood folds up into a launch ramp and the deer just flies over the car...last I saw of it was feet up at 15 feet altitude and still gaining. It does make a right mess of the front end though. My max is only up to two deer, though a couple more have tried. Gotta love good brakes!

I came within a foot of taking out a deer a few months ago. I had to swerve into the opposite lane (no cars) and barely missed him. I've always wondered if there's laws against tossing a hit deer into the back of a truck and taking it to a butcher shop..

yeah i have been thinking about just going to the junkyard for the parts but wouldn't the fender be mismatched and be pretty obvious unless i repaint the whole car.....ive been thinking about just popping the dent out so the corner light will fit back in......no real bumper damage just a small dent right next to a big dent that was already on the car....and theres no hood damage at all thank god

yeah the deer is dead i didn't actually see it but the 3 other people in the car said i smacked it right in the head and i was doing maybe 40mph so at that speed its dead but i didn't even realize i hit it right away....... i sorta just heard a 2 loud thuds and it went under the tire somehow so the car went up alil bit like goin over a speed bump.... but this is how the convo went inside the car:

me: wtf **** was that?
them: u just hit a deer
me: what?
them: a deer a ****in deer
me: i hit a ****in deer?
them:yes!!
me: what!?
them:
me:how the **** did i hit a deer?
them: look where we are (pointing to a deer crossing sign)
me: aww ****!

after all that i was pretty far down the road so i didn't go back to check on the deer (thats not illegal is it?) but i stopped got out looked at the light...i started peeling off hair out of the light and started cursing again and then threw the light in the trunk and got back in the car and kept driving....

sry everyone no pics yet cameras actin weird ill probably just buy a disposable and scan the pics on here....soon

thanxs to everyone ....and dont worry it'll take alot more than this to total my max
